replaced the turbo that failed... car's spluttering and giving kak, missfires and generally doesnt like life, then switches off and on again, then it's "fine" for a while... he's NOT impressed with the N54... turns out they eat turbo's like zuma eats tax money. another aquaintance said he's gone thru 3 sets on his 335i. in 60 000kms??? bugger that.

Bud something doesn't sound right who is doing this to his car :thumbdo:

Ya this doesn't sound normal. I have driven 2 x 135's both N54's that got pushed hard every day and have not had any issues with either. Actually I have never had any issues with any of my BMW's in the last 4yrs. Did you replace both turbo's?

tell your mate to find a mechanic who know what he is doing and not guessing his way around...:thumbdo:

if the car survived 90k kms before the turbo let go then why do they eat turbos?

Jacques has always been good to us, he is not just a mechanic he was the head of BMW Menlyn workshop for years and he knows what he is doing. That said you know the customer is always right. The car might have 90 000 normal km on and now not so normal.

Playing in a parking lot? what does that entail exactly? Doesn't sound like you guys where playing bingo or monopoly.

If the turbo went chances are something else got nailed as well which is not as obvious.

Jacques advice was to replace one turbo as his experience is that the other could go on forever... Hmmmmmm....

Yes, I see that.

I am just trying to understand why the one turbo will cause the other one to fail as well?

At 90 000 km. Shouldn't the car still have maintenance plan?

anything one turbo ingests can also be ingested by the other... common oil line supplys etc...

has diagnostics not revealed anything?

Honestly, you must ascertain what caused the turbo to fail in the first place. Fix that and only then put in new turbo. Otherwise the turbo is gonna keep on blowing or popping or breaking or whatever you want to call it.

As far as I know, N54's don't go through turbo like they go through tyres, so that info you got is way off in my opinion. My car is on 132 000 odd km's, still on original turbos. And I don't drive miss daisy...
