What fuel consumption do you guys get around town in your 120D's?? I am getting 8l/100km on average, manual states far less...

Hi, i get 5.7 to 6.5 on my daily route of 30km (return). thats a mix of fast and slow driving in traffic and freeway conditions (if that makes any sense?!)

I have a 320d, that i drive fairly hard, and i get consumption of about 8.2l/100km to 8.5l/100km.

It all depends on how you drive, ride the clutch, take off, brake and so on.

consumption is determined largely by driving style. you will find that on a long run, the diesel is frighteningly frugal, but on spirited driving in traffic, it still beats the petrols, fuel wise that is.

Also, check if you are filling 500ppm of 50ppm, i have heard that 50ppm gives you much better consumption as compared to 500ppm, but have not ready any scientifically based studies that can proves this, so at the moment it is all conjecture.

any way, thats my 2c worth.

Just called BMW and they confirmed that around town the 120D should average 6.8-7.4l/100km. So I booked mine in next Wednesday for a diagonstic and fuel consumption test, will let you guys know the out come.

SO took the car in to BMW on Wednesday to get the fuel consumption checked. They did a diagnostics on the car and it come out perfect so they just reset the driving adaptive learnings and say it should get better.

Well I have done 100km and so far they are right, average consumption is down to 7.7 from 8.5. will see how much I get to a tank now and report back...

hey gary,

time to resurrect an old thread, cos im about to buy a 120d. i initially started the hunt for fuel consumption reasons, and i found so many other reasons to have one.

so did your consumption get better or do you still drive like a monkey? LOL

Town driving has a bit too many variables to consider - is it just basic town driving with lots of stops/starts or sitting in bumper to bumper non moving traffic? Lots of hills? But, a diesel typically uses a lot less fuel when idling than a petrol does, so less of an effect on fuel consumption. My 330i sips fuel when it's moving, but the moment it's sitting idling and not actually going anywhere it's gobbling down fuel. So basically the difference between bad town driving and nice open road driving realistically, roughly 12 l/100 km versus 7.5 l/100 km. So combined typical works out to 10 - 11 l/100 km for my car, not bad for a 3.0l I6 NA. On the other hand, my diesel bakkie uses roughly 10.5 l/100 km regardless of town or open road driving...

Hope you get this sorted out.

I did the same thing to my 120d auto. Reset the computer. It's now down from 11s to 7.7 currently. That's also due to alot of long distance driving.
I would imagine the consumption should be even less???

I used to get 450kms to 550kms on a tank.
On the last tank I got 700kms after the computer was reset and with frugal long distance driving.

1 factor that hasn't been taken into account here is the fuel type you using.
Might be a good idea to mention that as well.

This is can also be a good experiment for you guys.

Drove x1 like a F1 car down to pe. Full luggage and passengers and 3 bikes on rack. Returned 11.8l/100km. Probably also due to fact that oil service was coming up. Normal town is around 7-8l/100km
