120d Coupe Enquiry

Hi Guys

I don't know if I am posting in the correct section as I am new to the forum, I have taken an interest in the 120d Coupe's and just wanted to find out how this little cars go and if there is any know issues on these models.

Also what km's is too high on them, what I have noticed is that they are very hard to come by because on the internet cant find a lot of those models in the diesel.

Reason why I am looking at the diesel is because I currently have a diesel VW and would like to still benefit from the fuel usage but still have a nice looking car. I am not that much for speed more for looks so being very fast doesn't bother me but some speed is needed would be good as well.

Then lastly what mods can one do on these cars.

Thanx
Timmo

Great cars, if you can find one.

Ive seen instances where they are more expensive than 320d's

Things to look for:
1. Full Service history
2. Comments on the car
3. If the car still has MP, inquire from the seller if they will pay for the transfer cost.

No major issues, IF looked after properly.

Try and find one from late 2011+ as those will have the last revision of that engine for the series (assuming they follow the 320d).

Consumption is excellent and they have a good amount of grunt.

Thank you for the feedback, yip they are quite difficult to find it seems and the prices on them is quite high yes. Saw a few 2009-2010 ones going for about R240k.

I have one of these as my daily driver.

It is alot of fun to drive, the pull you get in the seat when you accelerate is very addictive.
I have an auto my average fuel consumption is 6.4/100km I get between 700 and 800 km per tank of mixed highway and urban driving.

No issues that i know of. I would say make sure you find one with a service and maintenance plan just to be safe.

Good luck with the hunt

Yip I am getting tired as well now looking for one and thought of going for the 125 as well, there is more of them for sale.

What are you getting on the fuel consumption side? Really dont want to go back to petrol now as the diesel have been spoiling me on my Polo.

I have a 125i. The consumption is not great in urban settings. 12/ 13 l. But on the freeway it can average around 7/8l

As much as I like the 1-series coupe I can't see myself paying R240k for a 2009-2011 model.

If you shop around you can find a low mileage 2011 320d/330d with good spec in that price range and have money to spare.

The math doesn't really add up..

Specially if you consider that you are essentially getting more car. My friends 1series doesn't even have leather seats or cruise control.

I was in the same boat as you. I loved the sportiness and look of the coupe. In M Sport trim it is a super sexy car and still gets ones attention.

But then i started noticing that they some how retain more value and were selling for anything from 20 000 to 40 000 rand more than a 320D M sport.

It just doesn't make sense to pay more for a car that is smaller, if it does not have climate control you get horrific looking air con buttons, and the cheaper looking interior. Oh Yeah, and the 120D Coupes only came with the older 130kw engines opposed to the 2010 and up facelifted 3 series (known as LCI) 135KW 380nm engines. So more money for a smaller car, smaller interior, older engine... just didn't make sense.

If you have made the choice and want one regardless, then as the other guys have said:

1 - Call any BMW dealer, speak to service department, give them the first 6 digits of the cars VIN and ask to email you the service history of the car and if it has any comments.

2 - If it has a problem free history then you good to go. They are very strong, reliable engines and as long as you service them regularly often you good to go.

3- My other advice specs wise is, if you can, get one with the HI-FI sound option (there will be a grill on corner of the door frame for the tweeter) or even better, the Harman Kardon option (there will be the Harman Kardon logo in the same place). The standard bmw sound is quite crap, so if it has any of these options will make a nice difference to your experience.

Also as i said check it has climate control as an option. If you do then ou get the more modern looking air con control buttons rather than the very old looking knobs

Maybe some of the other 1 series drivers can jumo i here and tell you if there are any common 1 series niggles. But i doubt it.

All the best, and dont forget to show show was what you get! :coolShake:

Correct, when I was looking for one at the beginning of last year I found pricing to be senseless.
eg, a 2011 E90 320d Msport A/T vs a 2011 E82 120d Msport A/t with similar mileage but a 30k+ in pricing?
you can guess which one I chose.

But to answer OPs original question they are great cars, as above look for FSH , also look at the Mplan history to give you a feel of just troublesome the car was or wasn't. check for comment and accidents.
its a solid car that looks good , reliable an economical and not too mention the performance . im sure you'll be impressed after you drive one.

My wifes 2013 120d msport coupe(auto with paddle shift) currently has 57000kms on the clock. Not sure if she will part with it anytime soon-motorplan ends next year Sept...

They are lovely little cars, on avg she gets around 700-800kms on a tank. Just the suspension is a little hard for my liking.

These are great little cars and look great in motorsport trim, but I really would not pay a premium for these over a 320d with m-sport package.
