11 post-crash tips!

Confusion, shock, perhaps you're injured... A crash can be traumatic and that can cause most drivers to be so overwhelmed that they forget what to do afterwards. Check out our top 13 post-crash tips!

A crash can be an extremely traumatic experience and sadly they've become a common occurrence for many South Africans. There's a lot of confusion in the event of a crash and most drivers are overwhelmed.

DRIVERS NEED POST-CRASH EDUCATION

Mark Mathomes, owner of Plan B Roadside Assistance, shares his insight on the "do’s and dont’s" when the screaming stops. Mathomes has 20 years experience in roadside assistance, says it's evident that many drivers have not been educated on the steps that need to be followed post-crash.

Here are 13 important things to remember:

1 Check if anyone has been injured. If there are any injuries call an ambulance or the traffic department which will in-turn alert them.

2 Ensure that you and your passengers are out of harm’s way by vacating the vehicle and moving out of danger.

3 It's imperative to take down details of parties involved in the incident. You need names, addresses, phone numbers and email addresses so you or your insurance company can contact them. Other important particulars include ID numbers, licence numbers (include the code on the licence), vehicle registration numbers and the make and models of other vehicles.

4 Note important information such as the time of the crash, location, number of passengers, weather conditions and road surface conditions.

5 Take as many images of damage done to all vehicles involved. Should a party make a false claim the images will serve as proof against their claim.

6 All cases should be reported to the police, no matter how slight the damage. Should you not report the case the other party could claim that it was a hit-and-run or that you refused to provide your details. You’ll need an accident report to claim from your insurance.

7 Losing your temper could make the aftermath of the incident even worse. Stay calm and collected.

8 Don’t leave the scene until all details have been noted.

9 Don’t be dishonest when giving your statement to the police. By lying or exaggerating you are only jeopardising yourself.

10 Ask witnesses for their names and contact details, just in case legal action is taken.

11 Don’t wait too long to claim on insurance. If injuries occurred, it's important to mention this to your insurer to avoid any major financial claims.

Personal tip from my side: have your car towed (in the event that it cannot run anymore/you are not injured and need medical attention) to either 1) your own home or 2) to a BMW dealer - the major ones are open 24/7. I do not trust any panelbeater/tow truck company..

The few grand to have it towed back yourself after the insurance is sorted is a droplet in the bucket compared to endless crap you will have when they just take your car away..

+1 to the power of 1 million on this one, myself and my Mom will be able to tell you why ...

To add on the part of not loosing your tempor.

A friend lost his, ended up beating up the guy. In the end the cost of repairing his car to which the other party was found to be liable for, was less than what he had to pay the other guy for assault.

This is an awesome thread!

Though I think number 1 should be check if you are injured first then everyone else ,

Just recalling the time when a drunk driver hit my younger brothers car head on 3 years back while on his way back from univ tuts in the evening, Happened Near westwood mall on the M13 here in Dbn (the guy was driving on oncoming traffic at high speed drunk ) , I was one of the the 1st on scene (close to home) , I remember My brother being out of the car when I arrived, walking around , mumbling to people not realizing that he had taken a bad hit to the head, had multiple broken bones , arms shoulders , head, legs etc , and was bleeding heavily from his arm and head. I guess it was the adrenalin keeping him up because based on his injury's and the crash scene and the condition of the car there's no way he should have been walking around .

I got him in my car and rushed him to the hospital , from there he was rushed into theater. Thereafter went back to the crash scene, (very close to home )

Then again after recalling that evenings events, I wonder after such a hit would one still be able to remember anything .. Here are some pictures of the crash , He was very lucky to have come out of this alive.Very lucky to have taken the hit more on the passenger side as well, Still wise though to check yourself for injury's as even though it may not hurt, you may still have sever injuries.

His car was the Grey Honda , (now he drivers a mini cooper S , Hopefully that's now a stronger car. )
