100 or 150 Micron Tint

Howzit All.

I'm planning on getting my windows tinted. Phoned around to a few places. Car Boutique in Cresta quoted me R1495 incl Vat for the 100 micron Llumar 35% tint. The lady i spoke says that getting a 150 micron tint wont be the best idea because of the spacing with the rubber for the window - says the tint will get scratched very easily.

I then called Gauteng Car Sound, also in Cresta. The guy quoted R1500 incl Vat for the 150 micron Llumar 35%.

Does anybody know if the lady's claim is true or if the 150 micron is a bad idea?

Hi,

Theoretically it is possible of course, but I have had no issues with tint ever.

Then again, I have never asked about the micron spec, always the tint.

I have 150 micron Llumar on my 1M.
If you want to get a 3rd opinion you can PM me and I will give a contact number for your tinting. I paid a lot less. :fencelook:

I clearly got ripped off. Not going to say what I paid. But I have a life-time warranty on it.

So do I, and I had the tinting on my wife's car's driver door redone for free after 10 years, yes 10 years.

Llumar did the tinting (anti smash and grab) on my Wife's car and also used the 100 micron lifetime warranty tint saying pretty much the same - the problem apparently is that the rubber is quite tight against the glass on our cars and as such it is very easily scratched. Of course lifetime warranty, but then the inconvenience of having this redone.

I also had a 35% lumar smash and grab tint fitted on my car, but I'm not sure what micron spec it is. It does scratch a bit on my passengers side but I think it's because of my window regulator that's on its way out. I think I paid about the same. Around R1400 or so.

On a side note when i go the car the rear windows had verticle scratches on the rear so I can see what they are saying. But i put 150 micron on and no scratches so far.

What vehicle is it? The E90 will have a problem from 250 micron but we know what needs to be done there. From 100 and above it's regarded as a safety film below that it's a tint. I fit Defcon1 we offer min 130 single ply, 250 2 ply (Only BMW approved film) and bullet resistant 375micron 3 ply. Have never had any problems with the 250 so far and even on the 375 on a few X5's, X6's and 5 Series.

Try Solace Window Tinting in Weltevreden park. Got referred to them by Clearwater BMW, on a E90 I got it for just over 1k if I remember correctly. This was in January, for 150 micron 35% tint.

hi guys.

just my R2.75 here.

well its not an opinion its actually a story about the strength of higher micron smash and grab safety films.

so a while back i attended a car accident as im a paramedic. arrived on scene to a isuzu double cab bakkie that went up the light pole support wire and came to a rest on its side with the drivers wheel caught on the support wire.

we found one female with no injuries sustained. but because of the way the vehicle was positioned she was scared to take her seatbelt off. in turn we had to break a window to get in as she was so scared she refused to take her hands off the steeing wheel to unlock the doors.

out comes the trusty center punch.place it correctly on the window but it does not break.:thumbdo:

after repeated attempts still nothing. so now we bring out the j hook that the tow truck operators use to hook up a vehicle. thinking that i must have some strength to break the window with my new aquired center punch. after all i can lift my body weight times 1 and a half. (i weigh 55kg)

after alot of hitting still nothing. eventually it took someone much bigger and stronger than me a good couple of hard shots in. eventually it broke and we got our patient out.

total time it took was about 20 mins to 30 mins.

now where does my long story tie in with the micron size?

suveer stays in gauteng along with other loved fanatics. which is know for its crime rate.

if you getting a lifetime gaurantee on the film then go for a higher micron. it will not only save your family in a situation we never want to get into, but also in case some twat tries to smash your window and grab what you have studied and worked so hard for. in the event of an accident where you roll over. the glass will come on the film and protect you from further injury.
you can always get it replaced if it gets scratched. its got a lifetime guarantee on it. unfortunately with the way life works our loved ones do not.

take the higher micron it can save your life one day.

The guarantees dont cover scratches though. If the glass was shattered surely it would have been quicker to take a knife and cute the film?

Is there any update on this?
I am in the market for tint currently.

My E90 was tinted by a guy in Durban for R450 who came out to me and did it in 45 mins. Granted it was not the best quality tint or application (there were two bubbles on the rear that never came out) but for the price you cant really expect Llumar/3m etc.

I now need to tint the windows on my 5, and would spend a little to get perfect application, with a lifetime warranty.

any recommendations/contacts on reasonable and reliable places?

If in Cape town please stay away from quality tint- Tony,
i tinted a new f10 5 series by him, only to have him mess it up with bubbles all over-
i then had to threaten him for him to fix it up, he then did an even worse job and also damaged by rubber on the driver door and both high gloss strips at the bottom of the window.

he has been dodging me ever since.

i will find him, and when i do....:fishwack:

Howzit DieselF, hope you're good bud. I have Solace 150 on my car and the driver and pass is badly scratched from use. Solace.co.za FAQ say the do cover. Link. I'm going to call later and see. Would be a miracle to see a 'lifetime warranty' in action.

I had tinting done on my 5er not too long ago, and can honestly say that if your tinting costs under a grand, then expect what you pay for.

I paid 1k for mine and had to have it removed after hefty fighting with the service provider. I now have scratched windows, damaged window rubbers and broken panel clips because of the work done.

Go PG glass and get it installed properly for around 1.5k.

I am yet to redo mine as I am now very skeptical about anyone working inside my car again.

Hey dude, thanks cant complain :).

That's lucky. Well the salesman who I bought the car from wasn't the person from whoever did the tint, it was some McCarthy affiliate. But he said it doesn't cover scratches. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't know what he was talking about though.

That's good warranty you have.

On another note. I had my previous E90 tinted for R950 and the guys did a good job, it was out at blouberg? I dont think it was Llumar or anything but the workmanship was good.

So, I called Solace and they say the warranty has changed and they no longer cover scratches, BUT seeing that my film is less that 6 yrs old (Llumar max warranty of their product) they will replace it. They are in JHB but will direct me to someone in CT. Lets see how it goes.
Need to send pics of window and scan the booklet. Mmmmmm.
