Buying advice - M235i vs. M240i vs. M240i LCI

Hi all,

I am considering purchasing a 2 series in the next few months and was hoping to get some advice on which model to get. I want to buy a used (1-3 year old) auto coupe.

Is it worth paying the premium for the B58 motor over the N55?

Is it worth paying the premium for the LCI updated version of the M240i?

What is the age and mileage sweet spot for buying a second performance hand BMW? More specifically the M235/40?

Any other relevant buying advice will be appreciated.

Thanks,

M240i gets my vote!

As Performance cars go.. Get the history of the car you are interested in.. Check what has been done to the car.
I would say 20-60k kms is a decent mileage to look out for as it gives you room too..

All the best searching!

N55 vs B58 is a no brainer. The M240i is definitely the way to go.

Not a bad predicament you’re finding yourself in :tiptoe::thumbs:

I’d say it’s worth it to get the 240i, the B58 engine is amazing, drove my uncles one and it drives so good even in stock form

I would look at the price difference between the b58 and the n55. The n55 should be allot cheaper and almost just as fast. All depends on how tight your budget is.if you are rich get the 240i. You will lose more on it tho in a few years because its still so new were as the 235i n55 has already taken a big knock in price. Just my 2c

The M240i is awesome. I’ve had mine for a year and am thinking of selling. If you are looking at the B58 let me know if you would be keen.

They are very different in the way they drive and the N55 will not be as fast stock for stock.

I anticipate the B58 holding value better than the N55 since this will be the last of its kind if I am not mistaken.

My opinion, LCI M240 if the way to go, the LCI is just nicer.

That is true, stock for stock the b58 is better. But just ad a jb4 and downpipe and you will be faster in the n55. Vs a stock b58.

a new car can lose anything from 25-30% of its retail value in its 1st year! I see 2015 model 235i's go for R399k.

And 2017 240i for around R600-640k

Thats a massive price difference.

Thats is a good example of what the 240i will lose in the next 2-3 years. When they bring a new model. You will lose allot less money buying a 2015 235i then buying a 2017 240i when you sell it a few years later.

Thats true but at twice the cost ;). And nowere near twice the performance. Not even a 1/4 more..
If you can afford to lose over 200k in value alone get the 240i. If losing 50-100k sounds better get the 235i.

Well if i had that kind of cash i would just buy this and forget a 240i was ever a option. Cost the same like 50k more for this :D

Mate had a m235i and traded it in for an m4..
Ge regrets it daily as he doesn't use the m4 like he used to drive the m235i...

Also m4 very hard very low..

Anyways back to your issue.. if you can afford the m240i go for it. B58 is a gem..

If not the m235i is also a beaut..:cthulhu:

You can do better for that money with that kind of mileage IMHO if you see what dealers offer to M4 owners with half that mileage you might cry

If it was my money I'd add an M6 or M4... but OP seems to have specific criteria and questions so advising on that basis. B58 is really worth the premium. However lots of people have valid reasons for choosing lower end models from insurance to fuel to long term running costs etc. M240 is probably one of the most fun non-M cars to daily. Again just an opinion

I agree with you. The m6 is just NEXT LEVEL! And also 6-700k range. You cant even compair it to a 240i.
The 240i is nice but to much money for what you are getting id say.

600k-700k is stepping on M car territory which is a level up. It's also firmly in RS3 (pre-LCI)/A45 territory.

As others mentioned, you can get an m135/235 for sub-R400k nowadays (2015 model, at a stretch 2016). Yes the B58 is lovely, but not hell of a lot quicker; definitely not 50% quicker! It also doesn't sound as meaty, and a little too refined in its delivery.

Of course, if money isn't a criterion, I'd say go for the latest model, adding all the m accessories. Just don't drive a m135/235 thereafter before you test drive it. Could leave you a little underwhelmed after test driving the m240. So, if you're set on 140/240, focus only on getting it, but at a better price.
