sunroof slide cover

Hi guys

This really annoys me, why does the sunroof slide cover on the E90/E92's not close completely when sunroof is in tilt position?

I see the newer F30's etc... alloys the cover to close completely.

One question. Why would you want the cover closed when the sunroof is tilted?
My e46 does allow it but I will never do it. Easily forgotten and just that one day when it rains unexpectedly

I am referring to the cover inside the car (the one you can move back and forth) With that +-10 cm open space, allows for way too much sunlight...makes it uncomfortable to drive with. all my other cars that I had with a sunroof allowed for this cover to be completely closed.

This cover doesn't affect the rain in anyway...not too sure what you mean by that????

I think he is referring to the fact that one may forget that the sunroof is tilted if the cover remains closed and should it rain, there is a possibility that rain water may enter the car.

I think it may have something to do with allowing air to pass into the cabin from the tilt. If i remember correctly, the F30 has a sort of plastic grill in the cover which allows for this air to pass into the cabin even when the cover is completely closed... This is just my novice observation though so I would defer to the experts for their opinion...

If the inside cover is allowed to close complely:
a) you get no benefit from the tilted sunroof as no air could move through.
b) pressure difference between the outside and the inside could damage the cover. (like if you slam the door). Driving fast and a truck slipstream whips teh car...

I would suggest tinting the sunroof darker if it;s the sun bothering you. Like 10%.

Rain shouldn't easily enter the cabin with a tilted sunroof. Well, I know this applies to the E39 as it has a sort of drain plate that sits underneath the tilted opening.

Ask Rob, he knows too

I dont mind that it doesn't close completely, its kinda pointless to close the slide if the sunroof is tilted.

But i do agree, all my other cars with sunroof could close completely with the roof tilted.

On a nother note and maybe off topic, Who can tint these sunroofs darker? Ive noticed that the sun just catches you in the eye.

AHHHHH, No wait, Now i get it....

Thats why all BM drivers wear sunglasses...:biglol::biglol:

On the cars i have seen with the cover closing fully when the glass is in the tilt position, the cover has ventilation slits in for air to ventilate. On the older BM's it is a solid piece with no allowance for ventilation when closed. In my opinion, allowance for ventilation is the reason for not fully closing when glass is tilted. Plain and simple.

It has always made sense to me that the inside cover opens slightly when you press the tilt button. Now you know that it is open and the air that you want can get in. It seems to me like it was designed to do that.

On a Lexus, you have to open the inside cover by yourself after pressing the tilt button. Kinda surprising to see that the latest Beemers now march to the tune of that drummer.

On a related note, I had to replace the slider bracket thingy about five or six years ago. The stealers charged R117 for it. This was still a lot of money back then, especially for a small piece of plastic.

On my E-Class the sliding cover could be closed when the sunroof is tilted, and it also had a plastic grille which allowed air to flow through. On the 7-er, the cover also moves back when in tilt, but again, it does not have a grille and as such there would be little point to it being closed fully with the sunroof tilted.
