E36 318i misfires & stalls when going uphill

This is a weird problem.

The car idles & drives fine. I was driving uphill when I noticed the issue. About 200m up the hill it started misfiring and eventually died. It would start again and 20m further it would stall again. I was towed back to the workshop.

Upon investigation it was found that the spark plugs were a bit wet. Apparently it was over flooding. Eventually the car started again and when starting to drive up a ramp the same thing happened. It starts misfiring and dies.

Any ideas?

Does the E36 have an AFM?

I would say when it gives problems on uphills, you have to look further back, at your fuel pump and fuel tank, if everything there is working O.K. My car did the same thing - only uphill, eventually it turned out to be a loose positive terminal on the battery!

Yes it does have AFM, even e30 had afm.

His engine was flooded so fuel pump is working.

Yes it has a AFM. Yes it sounds like an electrical problem.

Fixed

Apparently there was no fuel in the tank. They added petrol and all was well.

What I dont understand is the fuel light was not evens on. The fuel gauge was just above the reserve before the light comes on?

Uphill means all the fuel would have been forced to the back of the tank, stop running your car dry.

Normally I ad fuel when the light comes on. This happened before the reserve light went on. Will have to keep an eye on that.
