M54 reset your throttle adaptations in 20 seconds

Found this on another BM site, thought it might be useful for the guys here.

1 Place key in ignition and turn to detent 1 and count for 10 seconds ( only position 1 do not start the engine. )
2.Turn key back to 0 position and count for another 10 seconds
3.Now turn the key all the way to detent 3 to start the engine

That's it your throttle is now reset. this can help to improve the cars throttle response. this little trick is always worth a go if you feel the car is a little sluggish or has been bought off someone who has just gone to the shops n back in their BM. In theory the throttle should now adapt slightly to your driving style

tried this last night... after doing some more internet reading... and it works! (or it's an awesome placebo :) ) Car feels much smoother now, and noticably more responsive. I read some other techniques about pressing your accelerator pedal down flat and stuff, but just turning the ignition on, waiting and then turning off did the trick. thanks for the share!

I bought the car and have been driving it daily, pretty much same route, for a couple of months now. but after the reset yday evening, and this morning, it felt more responsive. when I pulled away from one of the stops, it definitely felt a bit more responsive. Also, the throttle response certainly feels more linear, before it felt a bit dull at partial throttle, below 3000rpm, but it seems to be a bit more eager to accelerate at partial throttle now. Not ruling out the placebo effect, but if it is, either way I'm having a great time  did you try it?

I am sure this has been posted before, but...

Yes, for the E46 the throttle adaptations reset is:

Key in the ignition turned to the on position for 10 sec, then off position (one back) for another 10 sec - done. At least that seems to be the procedure on E46Fanatics and a few other E46 forums...

And for the E90:

Key Fob in and ignition turned on. Foot flat on the throttle for 30 sec and then push the Start button (DO NOT press the clutch or brake pedals). Leave everything as is for 2 minutes and then ignition off - all done.

Problem is, these adaptations come back fairly soon, so doing this every so often becomes necessary, but it is also very easy to be thought of as the placebo effect - and when I hear that term with regards to the resetting of adaptations it makes me want to vomit! It does work but of course depends on the state of the current throttle adaptations and so this means its either noticeable or not really noticeable at all making it very vague, hence being referred to as being imagined (placebo)...

Eish... then I guess Philip must be feeling quite queezy after reading my post... i had the word placebo floating all over the show
Just won't dare claim anything as FACT without real proof, in case this thread suffers the same fate as a certain recent TLGP post ;-) lol. Well, no harm in trying it, and I certainly felt there was benefit. thanks for also checking Philip... if more people give it a go and post their feedback, that would be great!

LOL, wasn't aimed at you, just the general replies on all threads relating to this on pretty much all forums. In fact I am guilty of saying/mirroring the same thing when I posted here about this years ago after trying it out.

I doubt there is really a way of proving this other than delving into the ECU values and seeing what it really going on. But in terms of feel, with the E46 I tried it on my Wife's car without telling her, and told her to take the car for a drive and say if she notices anything different. I went with her and immediately she said the engine and throttle felt smoother and more predictable - good enough for me!

Yup! same here, the point is tell if the feel is different... if the feel changes thats good enough for me too

The joys of drive by wire throttle and complex electronics, but when adaptations are added to the mix, this is when it gets annoying. If only there was a way to disable the adaptations and just have it stay in a default state...

This works every time for me. Except the throttle adapts back to my traffic driving style so quickly I've stopped bothering.

Just drive the car like it's supposed to be driven and there is no need to reset the adaptations. :)

The only car I have ever reset the adaptations, was my e46 330i, the day after it was registered in my name, but using a BMWScanner.

There is actually a unit you can by from turnermotorsport => http://www.turnermotorsport.com/p-1...-by-wire-enhancement-module-for-2001-bmw.aspx

But don't know if the price justifies the product.

Anyhow, some people claim that they hear a tick sound after this has been done, I heard the same tick sound, but yeah, haven't really gunned it to test the throttle response.

To be honest I was skeptical at first and wasn't expecting to notice a difference but I gave it a shot this afternoon and it made a huge difference:thumbs: I always felt the acceleration through first and second was a bit lazy but I thought it was normal. After resetting it feels a lot more responsive and smoother. As mentioned earlier it feels quite eager to go especially taking off in first:rollsmile:

So it's not just my imagination... or everyone's imagining
But I reckon it does work... my car used to do this annoying thing of staying in 4th at 60kph even if I'm cruising, which it could easily do in 5th. Now it shifts up at 60kph, something has definitely changed.
