If you under 40..BMW makes more sense..Porsche for the more mature car enthusiast...not strictly..if you can afford a 2015 GTS for around 1.7m..I'm going G8x rather..for the newer tech.

I feel the tech is more for the daily, the car you spend more time in.
There the heads up display, heated & ventilated seats, gesture control :)LOL:) , apple / android car play, adaptive headlights & high beam assist, driving aids etc. makes more sense I feel. More situations would arise where you're likely to appreciate and make use of these features.

Sure there are some tech features which are still great to have on a toy / weekend car, especially depending on the vehicle and it's size such as parking aids, heads up display (I wish this was more common on vehicles) and a few others but its a vehicle you drive less often and most likely outside of peak traffic and generally in better conditions and not the conditions you are forced to face on your daily commute (ie. thunder storm, hail, hot car after purchasing groceries because there was no shaded parking etc.)

agree with what was said elsewhere, weekend car could legit even not have a radio and be gucci.

If this is gonna be a weekend car at R1.5m you're into 981GT4 territory. And if you prefer 911s there are a few 997.2PDK cars for sub R800k floating about.

I'd only go M3 here if it was going to be a daily. If not I really don't see the point.
Agreed. Not sure why an M3 is being put on a pedestal and being looked at through rose tinted glasses, it's just a fast saloon car that is built to be used daily and nothing about it is exotic whatsoever.

Something like a GT3 or even a mainstream manual transmission 911 Carrera S makes a better case for being saved for the weekend because those cars are built from the ground up as sports cars and they are most certainly more of an occasion to drive than a fast 3 series with an automatic gearbox.

Jeepers creepers! Ultra negative on your part, mate. The M3/M4 is a 375kw sports car now ..out of reach for almost all previous gen M owners. It's still a legend for what it is. The Carrera S is priced 30% above the M car..that's a beeg jump..it better provide a pure sports car experience.

Not negative at all on my part, mate.

I am a realist, and when it comes to cars I look at things objectively. I dont drink BMW flavoured kool aid everyday.

The 911 Carrera S models I was referring to are the older 997 first and second gen cars which are well within reach, and the hydraulically assisted steering feel of those cars alone blows any BMW out of the water.

New vs new I think you're not looking at it accurately. Current M3 (on BMW webpage) is from 2.175m, 911 new (on Porsche webpage) is from 2.577m ~ 400k difference is more like 15-20%, not 30%. Now keep in mind the depreciation expected on a BMW M3/4 vs a 911 - the M3 makes great sense if it's your one and done car. It does everything really, really well. But at the end of the day it *is* a 3er. Nothing BMW can do can hide that the basic ingredients are the same as in a 318i 3pot thing. From some of the plastics all the way to the dynamics.

If you need 1 car to do everything. Then yes - the M3 makes great sense. It is spacious, fast, fun to drive and has miles more boot space.
But if you have a daily 320d or something and it's just for the weekend then, short of *loving* the looks, it makes no sense why you wouldn't just get a 911 or something similar (depending on what M3 you're looking at you can go for a 996 for similar money to a rough E46M3, a 997 is cheaper in many cases than F8x M3/4 and a newer G era M3/4 gives you plenty of options 997TT is cheaper in most cases, 991.1 you could do a C4S easily, 992.1 C2S probably cheaper than a new one or of course a GT4, 981s are around the 1.2-1.6m mark, 718s are around 1.6-2m).

Basically at the prices asked (no idea how rigid BMW are on pricing, maybe they're giving these away at R200k under RRP!?) the M3 only makes sense as a do-all 1 car solution. Given the space most middle - upper class south africans have we can easily build extra garage space so a 1 car solution at R2m+ makes (to my mind) no sense.

And I say this as somebody with 1 garage only.

I said..Carrera S..who cares abt an entry level 911 at 272 kw 450nm. The S is priced at over 3bar..that's slightly over 35% vs the G8x

I guess my point is you're not going to buy a 911 over an M3 because it's more powerful or does 0-100 faster, you'll buy it because it fulfills the "weekend fun car" requirement better than an M3 does.

Hell, an old cayman S is probably a better "fun" car than an M3 is, even with ~ half the power.
