Buying Engine Oil

Consistency of supply is my major issue with the well known international brands that are almost "botique" in nature locally. I used to run nearly all my cars exclusively on Mobil. Then all of a sudden it just ceased to exist and now sometimes you spot a bottle or two somewhere. Valvoline is similar sometimes there is a wall of the stuff at autozone and then three months later nothing.
thats the only place I get it from.

Find a Porsche independent workshop - they will normally carry stock and be able to easily get Mobil 1. I don't think you're going to find these things off the shelf in a lot of places, just because store managers perception is that it doesn't sell and is taking up space. They probably sell 1000 bottles of GTX for every bottle of Mobil 1.

It has become this way with a lot of stuff - even premium detailing supplies.

Life is seasonal……..some people not poor, just broke which is temporary.

Even if they were poor, we cant judge or look down on them. Some all they need is a fighting chance.

This is very true, but there are also behaviours and patterns that keep you poor or are otherwise pennywise/pound foolish. I have plenty of very wealthy friends that also do strange things eg: buying R120K rims but worrying about R200/tyre difference... because when they were poor the tyre price was a big thing and remains a big mental hurdle somehow. Anyway - I've had too many long posts this week and I am sure you get what I mean :ROFLMAO:

Not to go into too much detail, but this is so true. Not meant in a derogatory way, but poors gonna poor indeed.

For example, a builder I was using, managed to get some bigger contracts which enabled him to buy a bigger bakkie for the business. What did he do? He used substandard quality materials which meant he lost that contract. To make matters worse, he didnt take out insurance on his bakkie and wrote it off while drunk driving. His business is now dead and he has retreated back to Zim. This is "poor" behavior - purposeful or ignorant self sabotage

Another example of a friend who risked a decent paying job by effectively stealing/defrauding the company he worked for. He got caught and lost 30k a month because he was greedy for another 1k on the side.

Last example, and something we see everyday; someone who doesnt have much, will put everything he has into a 200k BMW and will proceed to run it into the ground with no maintenance and no insurance. If he doesnt write it off, he will struggle to sell the POS car for 50k. Meanwhile, if he had lived within his means and looked after the car properly, he would most likely have gotten 150k for the same car come sale time. Who gets blamed for this 100k loss he has suffered? White monopoly capitalism, obviously.

Poors gonna poor

No matter my broke ass 15years ago, my cars were serviced on time with the best oil i could afford that car was sold with nearly 400k on the clock and the engine was still absolutely perfect. Poor is very much a state of mind and will never change. Hence poor is gonna poor.

Many moons ago as a collective of friends we had one friend always complaining lack of funds, boss is a poes that, etc etc. And then he got retrenched, a bunch of us were talking about if we should not pool what we have to just help said guy out and one guy pointed out if XXX has money for Smoke and Drink, and moans about money well then is he really spending wisely. Since then i have followed that mantra.

Poor is a state of mind, and poors gonna poor. You have a X5M but you buy linglong dong fench ditch finders one by one and cook your transfercase and dump it at WBC, that is a poor who is pooring.

Having little cash does not make one poor, when i prefer to poor i refer to the kind of guy who should buy a Picanto but goes and buys a used BMW and then runs it into the ground, the people who complain about lack of money, but it's party time every weekend, the ones who cancel their insurance because not enough money.

Ayy, a previous work colleague of mine is in the process of buying a 420d and he messaged me about insurance. Asking me where to look as he is struggling to find insurance and when we were working together had some discussions about insurance.
He sent me a screenshot of him being quoted over R3000 per month for insurance on his 420d and when I did a quick check I was quoted under R1k a month.

Turns out when he purchased his Polo many moons ago he kept the insurance for a year only and then cancelled it and has not had insurance since so now without a proper insurance history he is being hit hard. He eventually took insurance with a massive R30k excess but it has dropped his monthly premium to R1900.

Previously he was not earning the best salary, but one which I imagine would allow him to afford insurance on his Polo without too much sacrifice.
He at least agrees and understands that insurance is a must with the 420d and has no plans on cancelling it, he mentioned that the bank will force insurance on you if they find out you tried to cancel your insurance as well?

People do odd things, but to be fair when I first got my bike I did not have insurance right away as I was not even working yet. I was still studying and fresh out of high school.
I did not fully understand the insurance thing until it was properly explained to me. When I started working I took out insurance.

You can be earning very little money and still be doing 'the right things' in life and getting yourself on a path to better things (or even just a sustainable life). People are oftentimes the architects of their own misfortune and some even enjoy being a perpetual victim in life.

Not having insurance is one of those things that I take a dim view of. This is not something anyone driving a car can claim to be ignorant of, not least of all someone buying eg a 420d - But it is the South African way... worry about the almighty 'monthly installment' and do everything to maximise what you can get beyond all logic including just straight up renting the car while adopting all the risks of ownership.

One thing I think the forumites have learned is never to dare suggest someone can't afford something or will struggle to maintain it, especially if their bank told them it was OK and they are financing it the same way 'rich people' do it :ROFLMAO: When things go belly up, blame the evil bank, evil insurance company, the scammer dealer... anyone who mislead them, except the person staring back in the mirror.

Ouch.... That's gonna hurt if claim time knocks
Indeed, so hopefully he does not have to claim before the insurance price is reduced.
At least he has cover as well. Big excess is better than no cover and it is a lesson he has had to learn the hard way.
