Thoughts on E46 330ci coupe

Hi, new member (long time lurker) here

I've been wanting to get another E46 (owned new 320i and 320d previously) and the 330i and 330d appeal to me (but only the late model 6 speed, which appear to be unicorns). I'd go mad for an M3, but pricing seems to have gone crazy.

I know a guy who has a 2001-ish (non f/l) 330ci coupe that he brought back from the UK about 8 years ago, so I guess he can sell it now. It looks entirely original and well cared for. The concern that I have is that it's still on UK plates. I haven't asked him about that, but I think you're supposed to register your import immediately, so I don't know what gives there.

So here's my question (finally):
I read a few posts here about the desirability of the 330ci vs M3 and the consensus appeared to be at the time (2019-ish) that the M3 was the better choice for the money. However, given the current price of M3, is that argument still valid? For looks and performance, and at a reasonable price point, doesn't the 330ci makes sense now?

Also, what do you think a reasonable price would be for this car, given its rarity in SA? (auto, ~250k kms).

The to-do list for this car is probably going to be extensive - refurbish everything (bushes, hoses, coolant system, etc.) I'd probably also want to convert to 6-speed manual if I went with it. It's a car I want to keep and enjoy, not flip, so I think the cost of doing those things plus purchase price doesn't need to ensure a profit on resale. And I'd like to get my hands dirty with a project.

I don't really see why an E46 330ci should be materially more desirable than the sedan, and that it's auto probably dulls it's attractiveness further. If you have budget for it, an E46M3 will be a far, far more worthwhile car to sink tons of money/time into, but if you want a coupe and fun, then just get a locally reg'd 325ci - can even swap in an M54B30 eventually if the B25 gives up and have the "330ci" experience either way.

Or consider a Z4 3.0si coupe - can be had in manual, probably in the mid 100s range now? Maybe 180-200 for a really good one. Obviously no rear seats but the boot is sizeable (even bigger than an M coupe as the battery is up front).

E46 330ci prices are not going up. It will cost you an arm and a leg to restore, bring maintenance up to date, etc….you will not recover your money.

E46 M3 prices have been going up, whatever money you put into it, you are likely to recover (Provided you get it at the right price).

These cars are more than 20 years old. Heavy maintenance costs will apply to both, unless you buy one that was well cared for along the years.

330i in Manual are really hard to find.
sedan or coupe it doesnt really matter. If i was in the market for one i would probably pay a premium for a Face Lift in M Sport trim.
I wont bother with a none M Sport (I dont find them attractive at all)

in saying that LCI M Sport 330i Manual is what to look for. A clean one with tracible maintenance can fetch a good price. I Know of a few that sold in access off 200k.

Who knows what they will fetch in another few years with the M3 going for crazy money.

You also need to bare in mind that the market will be limited. Cash Money deals asking a premium really narrows down the target market and this impacts market value for non "classic" cars.

The quality of these varies WILDLY. One of my mates recently bought a decent LCI cabrio for R70K in need of some mechanical work (running and driving though). Bearing in mind what else you can get for 150-200K (I feel like you would be in this kind of area total cost wise by the time you have done all your refurb, conversion and repair work), it will never make sense financially (but you know this already). However, I also don't think this is going to tick the box you think it is going to tick for you and the frustration of doing all the work may lead you to abandon the project, as has been the case with many of these.

Also IMHO, by all means FIND a manual, but don't bother going through the trouble of retrofitting a manual... you will thank everyone for this later. I don't think these (or most modern manuals) are particuarly good anyway... not to the degree that you should go about retrofitting one.

The UK plate story is an interesting one. I am not sure how this didn't attract a ton of attention during his time here, unless he never really drove it. He MIGHT have been maintaining the licensing in the UK but I don't think so (MOTs and all that).

Sounds like headaches and cost all round I'm afraid

Agree - any premium he pays on getting one in the actual spec he wants (with eg: only some maintenance to take care of) is still cheaper than pursuing a butchering/conversion project to get something that is ultimately still not going to tick the boxes.

If you do go for it, being a UK car, check for rust
Check the fenders, remove side skirts and plastic covers below, check the jack mounting points

a 330ci coupe in SA is cool as we didn't get it and personally I would say its definitely more desirable than the sedan. I would only purchase a manual with Mtech kit though personally. That Auto box makes me nervous and is the main reason I sold mine.

Thanks to everyone for all the feedback - lots of good advice here.

I agree that the M3 is a (near) future classic and the better buy, provided I can find one at a reasonable cost and in good condition. Unfortunately, dealers and sellers seem to think the future has already arrived. So' I'll just wait.

Just one more question though: I've been looking almost exclusively on FB marketplace, WBC (yes, I realise) and Gumtree. Where do people who know how to buy BMWs look for their deals?

You have to look everywhere. Autotrader, gumtree, facebook, forums etc.

The problem with Facebook marketplace, this is where all the trash go. Literally. You can wade through 100s to 1000s of ads. 99.9999999% will be junk. Clean e46s here are unicorns. The facebook groups are better, less junk, but the clean e46s will still be a rare find.
