discussion Sand/dust collecting on rear window

Hey all.

I've been noticing for a while now that there is sand and dust collecting on the rear window and specifically ends up lying on the rear window of my 140. I'm not sure if the maxton style diffuser is causing a vortex causing the sand and dust to blow back on to the rear window.

Had anyone else experienced this? Ara all aftermarket maxton style diffusers hollow behind? Can that be the issue?

most hatches "hatch type" cars does this. My moms old 1984 1.6GLS Kadett, with no wing did this, my Kadett 200is is doing this and my X5

I was just going to post something the other day in this regard but felt i was being a Karen

My biggest gripe is driving in the rain, the entire boot and bumper are covered in dirt.

The worst being the boot strip on the bumper. It's so frustrating. I have tried adding various liquid waxes to help keep it clean and nothing.

I feel you frustration 🫤

Unfortunately this is just how air flow works. It happens with sedans as well but the dust just sits on the back bumper/vertical portion of the bootlid as opposed to the window. If you have ever pressure washed a sedan with a numberplate holder it becomes apparent just HOW MUCH shit accumulates there and what the airflow is probably like. This is why hatches have a rear wiper (or why they used to anyway) when sedans have exactly the same window area/visibility challenges. It is just less likely that there are visibility issues with a sedan.

You will always get this to some degree no matter the design of the car. If anything your diffuser is probably resulting in less than normal dusting

I had 2 x Z4 coupes, the first one the 3.0 didnt have the issue of dust collecting on the rear screen, but the M did, my only theory was it had wider wheels which propelled dust to that area..
anyway its a first world problem

Makes perfect sense..my f20 also has wider wheels on the rear and the Aero kit.

OK...I just wasn't sure if it was the after market diffuser causing this. At least now I know, glad I asked. And yes...with the rain it's even worse! Thanks everyone.
