G20 330D 2020

So having owned 4 x 3 series diesel BMW's in the past I've always wanted to own a 6 cylinder petrol at some stage. Seems like that time has still not come since I stumbled uppon an immaculate G20 330d 2020 M Sport. Car is white with black interior. I might have overpaid but who knows since there are so few of them in te market its very hard to determine a fair price.

Currently has 99 000km on the clock and MP still active.

The plan is to use it as an occasional daily and for client visits. Roughly about 6000km per annum so not a lot, thus the higher mileage does not concern me as I will average it down over the vehicles lifetime.

I will probably drive the car from 100 000km - 150 000km

Any recommendations on extraordinary maintenance over this period appart from oils, filters and brakes?

Gearbox Service?
Timing Chain (probably not)
Anything else?

Will post pics soonScreenshot 2024-09-18 100411.png

Congrats bud. This is a really rare car since it was discontinued.

Get the gearbox service done at ZF, perhaps the diff oil change as well.

If out of plan, get a downpipe and ECU remap done - will transform the car!

I am considering an unlimited coverage warranty for 2 years and some light performance mods therafter, downpipe en remap.

If i'm correct the gearbox service is before 120 000km?

Hi

I would recommend that you service the box ASAP. ZF usually indicates that it must be serviced between 80k and 100k.

Things I've got done on mine:

Still Under MP:
Complained over and over about the Gbox shifting bad and managed to wiggle a gearbox oil change out of them.
Brake pads/disks are very expensive. Complain about squeeky spongy and have it replaced.
Sunroof rattle. Some clips need to be replaced.
Aircon service. I found the G20 aircon to be a bit slow to cool.

Tried very hard for a new battery as it gave me a low battery warning. Its because I dont drive it much. Never got that one, lol.

After all this, I went for Stage 2 with DP. I dont think I can now claim for items that are not general maintenance as the car will get plugged in and plan voided.
Have been for 2 services so far, so all good.

Try and drive fast on the open road only after the mods. These 3.0d's on stage 2 have no launching capability at all. Tyres are also just too narrow at the rears and they dont last!

Try and get the above done under MP if possible.

Thanks appreciate the advice, will see what needs attention as I only have 1000km of Motorplan to play with then im on my own.

I see on the history they have done brake fluid as well as fuel filter change but not coolant flush, assume this is an item only done later but something I would probably also like to get done.

Got the detailed specsheet with optional extras, must say I am very glad for most of them.

Car was booked in at the dealer, could get an aircon service done and they reset the gearbox adaptions but said gearbox oil is fine after checking.

Replaced 2 rears with the same set of Bridgestone Potenza's. Picked up a few slightly buckled rims, typical for SA roads and had them straightened.

TyreMart and the Dealer did however note that one front shock is slightly bent, cant feel it whilst driving so not sure if I should attend to this immediatly or just leave untill I replace both later on. Was only picked up when doing wheel alignment.Screenshot 2024-09-18 100411.png

Some preventative maintenance items I am still considering:
Gearbox and diff service
Engin coolant change
Serpentine belt, maybe only later

Not too much going on with the 330d.

Had the gearbox replaced by dealers just before end of MP, complained about jerky movements when shifting between P,D and R, not that serious and they offered to replace it. Had the diff oil changed as well just before 100 000km.

Other than that the B57 is a super nice daily and perfect in traffic, never a robot that cant be caught and lane changes are super efficient.

I do from time to time smell slight exhaust fumes around the drivers area (mid section outside) of the car, dont know if im just overly sensitive or what it could be.

A little basement shot:

Those fumes could possibly be the car saying to you: "Time to get rid of these CATs bro, I need some Stage 2 tuning as well!"

Yoh new gearbox on a G series!

Sure they found something major wrong to get a large cost like that approved by MP.

Big win for you though well done!

A little update. Still thoroughly enjoying the car.

Wanted to flush coolant, these cars certainly are not designed for an easy flush. Opted to drain the coolant reservoir 3x times and refill with OEM between driving periods. Must say the coolant does mix quite well and you can almost drain 5L which is quite a lot. The PH of the coolant in the car has risen back to above 8. This process maybe uses a bit more coolant than normal but labour wise its much easier. Will just do it again in 12 months time. I get that you will not drain residue in the bottom but the lower pipes does not sit right at the bottom of the radiator anyway.

Had a rear brake pad warning, checked them to still have lots of meat on and no need for change. Only changed the sensor and reset on ISTA and problem solved.

On a side note my Discovery has the same gearbox, ZF 8 HP. I ordered an oil change kit from ZF for only R4700, comes with new bolts, gasket, oils, pan and filter. Assume you can do the same for the BMW's. They DIY on the gearbox service is rather easy and straight forward. Only setback on the BMW would be the low ground clearance so a lift would make your life a lot easier.

I think it is time to remove EGR, DPF and stage 1.

On the EGR do I opt for software only or physical blank plates as well?

I do not want to remove the cats since I dont like the exhaust tone without them, will the removal of the DPF only cause the cats to clog up?
