Had to be Done

So, I'm seeming to go through cars like it's nobody's business at the moment, and although sort of happy with the 760, some reasons, which I'll outline below, have now sent me back to get another cars. Yes, cars.

So reason for dropping the V12. While that engine is a thing of beauty, incredibly powerful, incredibly smooth and luxurious, since taking ownership of the 760 last year, I have had endless issues. In the year I've had it, it has been to BMW no fewer than 9 times to have issues repaired, with the repair bills sitting somewhere between R400k and R500k. The last bill was R160k, and although all of these issues were covered under Motorplan, that ceased to exist on the 30th of July. I actually collected the car two days (after it had been at BMW for 3 weeks) after the MP expired, with no further option to extend. So sitting with increasing anxiety about a car that has spent more time at BMW than in my garage, I pulled the trigger on a 2022 X4 M40i (I was offered a X4MC but after research discovered that the M40i was a better daily due to a more forgiving suspension and the M40i is 100% less attractive to okes in Golf Rs at traffic lights).

On top of that, I decided it was time for an upgrade to my wife's 2017 MINI Cooper 4 door, which is starting to show it's age a bit, and is getting a bit cramped with my boy growing like a weed and getting increasingly cramped in the back of the MINI. Plus the boot is no bigger than his now fast growing shoes. So I did a double deal.

My wife's replacement is a 2024 128ti in Skyscraper Grey, 1900kms on the clock (it's a demo), really lekker little car (she can have the X4 if she really wants). I don't have pics of it yet as we're only getting that on Saturday, she doesn't even know she's getting it yet. So one of two things are gonna happen here, I will be a eunuch come Saturday lunch time left to wander the world in mystified stupidity, OR, the luckiest and most loved husband ever. We shall see, I'm fearing the former here, not the latter....

Just as a matter of interest, I did consider an M340i, really like that LCI look and the new tech is amazing, but they're very hard to find and when you do find them they're horribly over priced or gone quite quickly. I wasn't into getting another M car, I'm kinda done with that, I was looking for a different driving experience with a SAV and I really looked into the X4 M40i a lot before making the decision. Obviously full MP on both cars for the next few years is exceptional peace of mind, so that was a massively contributing factor as well.

The issues with the G12:
  • Two days after collecting, back to BMW for a new cooling system overhaul, sat there for 3 weeks
  • A week after collecting from this issue, expansion tank needed replacing, two days at BMW
  • A week after collecting from the expansion tank, back to BMW for two new batteries
  • Then a brake fluid service (only time the car was at BMW for something not being broken)
  • After holiday in CT, back to BMW for right front air suspension replacement
  • Then back for a front left air suspension replacement
  • At the same time, the entire airconditioning system packed up, whole dashboard had to be removed, this is still not fixed
  • The transfer case for the xDrive system also needed to be replaced, after BMW didn't believe that there was an issue
The last two issues were R160k to sort out. So ya.

So here it is, 2022 Sapphire Black Metallic X4 M40i (I believe this B58 motor is just the business, also my first straight 6 BMW since my Z4 M Coupe I owned in 2014).

Congrats!

The next owner of that 760i is going to be either the luckiest or unluckiest man on earth.

I'll reserve the right to remain silent on this one, but for the sake of being politically correct, let's go with the former rather than the latter. It's a stunning car, really is, but ya, let me stop there.

Great selection….X4 has a nice ground clearance yet drives like a sedan.

V12 is an epic machine, hopefully the turbos in the X4 makes up for the change. No doubt B58 is the best Straight 6 engine in the market now.

Congrats.

Congrats on both new cars.

Good to know that BMW flagship model is still a colossal piece of shit, a tradition they maintain ever since the E65.
Ya look. The refinement and what not and the power blah blah is all fantastic. But you can see how it's almost a beta version before that tech gets better and filters down. Also amazes me how quickly modern BMW interiors age. When I got into the X4 I was actually quite stunned by how vastly different the cabins feel. At least I have now been through all BMW V engines and I'm quite content to be back in straight 6. Car drives amazingly. Coming back from BMW Midrand this afternoon the car felt really smooth, very refined, very quiet. In sport mode that exhaust note is bloody nice. I'm quite smitten. My wife... Not so much. So my statement about being deballed on Saturday, I should really get a job as a financial markets analyst because my ability to predict the future is very good.

Don't be pessimistic. I'm sure she'll appreciate the effort and virtue. If not, well, keep the 128ti in the garage for a while. Like, a LOOONG while. She'll eventually think she loves it😂
