Hey guys,

Looking for some advice...or perhaps persuation 😛

Currently own a 2011 F25 X3 20d with 128k on the clock. Car has served me really well but had some comments during my last service about parts that might need replacing soon. Not all need to be done immediately but within the next year or so preferably.

With the current car market, a replacement would be quite expensive for an equivalent size car or even something newer but smaller like a newish 120i/125i.

Now my question is do I sell it? As spending around 1/6 of the resale price on the parts seems like a waste (also itching for something new 😅)

Oorrrrr do I keep and use the cost I would be saving per month on car installments and pay for the work needed? Still have 11 months left on car installments for the X3.

Regardless of your response to the above, in my mind selling a paid up F25 2.0d for a 120 or 125i would be mistake.

I think you've answered yourself bud. That car is a keeper.

Keep the car. It is a 20d. It should go on forever with maintenance in order. Split those repairs into front and rear suspension to take the sting off the full cost. Prep for some fluid changes for your axles/box. Perhaps get a service/report done on your gearbox for added peace of mind?

Any savings from instalments put into a slush fund to cover all your cars. Don't stop 'paying' for the car. You will find this works out well and you will earn interest on that amount anyway. If the car treats you well in a year or two you may have enough cash to drop on something special and still keep your paid up X3. You have the last 11 months left on it... if you had 2-3 years left maybe I'd be more in favour of changing it. You could conceivably delay the non essential repairs until after you've paid it up.

I wouldn't advise buying any car just yet. Not financial advice but this is an election year, the economy is in a very interesting place and in a world with so much flux, I wouldn't be adding R1M of debt to my life until there is a bit more stability all round.

BTW R36K is going to be a little more than two payments on a new X3. When you put that into context it makes a heck of a lot more sense to undertake 36K in repairs for another 120000km of use on the suspension. Even if you have to spend that money over again on the motor or diffs etc it will still make sense.

Now visualise that sweet 150+K sitting in your slush fund at the end of <checks notes> year 1 of no car payment and you will suddenly stop worrying about rat race things or repair bills.

I have the very same. 2011 2.0d standard suspension (thank god)
I did do a few suspension work last year. Was on the cheap/diy side.
Gona do my front shocks soon.

I'm with the others. Definitely keep it. Try spread the maintenance over a period so its not all at once.

Ja i am with the guys on this one, I am in the same predicament. Sold the M135i last year and itching for a replacement. BUT Have 2 paid of vehicles and the wife's SUV needed a new release bearing which meant new clutch. The bill for a korean clutch is R19500 just parts after scratching around and making sure it is LuK products, so excluding fitment.

But as Lew said, calculate the costs of a replacement and that R24000 I had to spend was sniffed at comparing R25000 a month and bringing on R1 500 000 of debt...especially in volatile times.

You have an absolutely peach of a car, mileage makes us all scared because we all have it in grained in us that the 6 figures are bombs exploding one at a time till that car falls to the ground ha ha but it is now, the X3 is solid many here bare testament to that.
Good luck, keep the car....it is a brilliant all-rounder...you wont regret it.
