My V10

Hi guys

I hope everyone is well.

After much searching, I eventually found what I feel is a well cared for M6. Everything on it works perfectly. There are a few stone chips, but it's kind of expected for a 16 year old car that hasn't had any touch-ups done to it.

My FJ Cruiser is my daily drive, so this is for weekends. But knowing how much I love these works of art, I'll probably be driving it a bit more than weekends only as I find it really difficult to just let it stand.

2007 with 88700km on. FSH with agents and Budler.

I'm hoping to keep it as "brand new 2nd hand" as possible.

The usual preventative maintenance has been factored in and will be done over the next few months. If anyone has any opinions or thoughts on this, please feel free to share. I'm open to all the advice I can get.

Just a few pics from today...

Thanks very much, guys. Appreciate it. In for a service today so we'll see the outcome of that and hopefully get a better idea of what condition the car is really in and plan the preventative maintenance going forward. Again, if anyone has any advice, please do share.

I haven't driven her much. Waiting for a new set of tyres...PS4S. That's always the first thing I do when getting a car. I never trust tyres from someone else. Then we'll be off for a drive.

No matter how the day goes, I always have a huge smile on my face after a little drive.

They're a lot.

  1. Bearings should be done (if they not already), by at least 100,000kms.
  2. Throttle actuators will need to be done (if not already), they WILL fail.
  3. Idle actuator will need to be done at some point.
  4. Keep it serviced with regular oil changes, don't do more than 10,000kms between oil changes, always have the oil analyzed to ensure there's no funny business in there.
  5. Services, with plug changes, 10x plugs @ at about R350 a plug.
  6. Coil packs tend to fluctuate between good and bad, but when you change one it's recommended to change all 10. Depending on where you go, 7.Bosch OE ones from Goldwagen are about R450 (I think) a shot (better than the R1500 a shot from BMW).
  7. Car uses very specific oil, 10W40 if I am not mistaken, 5L is about R1000 give or take. Do NOT use any oil but this one.
  8. For the hydraulics, specifically the power steering, use Pentosin CHF 11S (you can get it from Goldwagen, do not use ATF in that system, it will ruin it).
  9. Power steering pumps can be a bit finicky, don't think they can be repaired, may be mistaken, so make sure my point above is followed, good maintenance will prevent the pump from failing or going wonky as long as you use the right fluids.
  10. On my first M6 I had an issue with the SMG gearbox, it was a clutch position sensor that plugged into the gearbox, basically sends a signal from the clutch through the control modules to the ECU to let the gearbox know it's time to change gear, or engage the clutch, or whatever. Not expensive (well 8 years ago anyways) but was a PITA to replace.
  11. Tyres, stick to the correct tyre sizes, specifically on the back, otherwise it affects the cruise control, as in it won't work. Think the back tyres were 285/35/19 or something like that. If you go 285/30/19 the cruise control won't engage.
  12. DO a diff oil change on this thing. I know BMW say it's a lifetime sealed unit, but it's worthwhile to do the preventative maintenance and replace the diff oil. No harm no foul doing it.
  13. Don't fiddle with the exhaust. Straight pipes sound awesome for the first 3kms before you want to get out and walk because it's so deafening. Leave it stock, it's meant to sound that way.
They're amazing cars, very special, I love the two I had until the second one started giving me endless issues (was a 2007 build but a 2009 registration, go figure). The sound of that V10 at full chat is something visceral, and something every BMW nut should experience at least once in their lives (either as a passenger, driver or owner).

You have a great example there, really nice with great mileage. Just do the stuff properly and that engine will last forever. Or, it'll go bang, and you'll be single, living in a halfway house trying kick your addiction that you started because you lost your wife/girlfriend, friends, life, house, to replace the engine. So good luck!

Sorry, forgot to mention, for the throttle actuators, don't pay the R25k (per actuator) before labour from BMW. Go to www.rebuild.org.uk and buy from them. He offers a lifetime warranty on the actuators, so they break, he replaces. Check his website out, yeah the ZAR/Pound is hectic, but having the knowledge that your actuators are lifetime guaranteed is worthwhile. I replaced both in my last M6 with units from him, took less than 10 days to arrive from the UK and they looked brand new. Also, the process for replacing them isn't that hectic, so if you are handy with a long screwdriver and some sockets, it can be done in under an hour.

Hi guys

I hope everyone is well.

I had the actuators replaced about a month ago. A simple and painless process dealing with Jason in the UK. Thanks, @Bugger, for the help sourcing these. And all the additional advice! This has been a great help.

Bearings and a few other items up next. I'm just waiting for parts to arrive. A big thank you to @Peter@AEW for all your advice with this, too. If I was nearer, I'd send my car to you without any hesitation.

These two gents have a vast knowledge of these cars.

There are a few stone chips on the bonnet, bumper, and driver sideskirt, but I'm living with those for now. I don't particularly want to blow anything over as the paint is still original. So, I'm still deciding on these issues.

Besides, preventative maintenance is more important to me at the moment.

This really is an incredible vehicle! Effortless power and that V10 sound is so addictive!

Any time Shaun, happy to help bud! For the stone chips, it's not an absolute answer but it does work relatively well, see if you can get a touch up kit from BMW for your colour. It comes with a bottle that has a brush in it and a clear that you can add once it's cured. Not sure what the cost is, but relative to repainting or respraying, it's a simple way of covering up some small chips that are floating around. If you get your paint code just google it and you should get the options relatively easily!
