Mission Aborted: 987.1 Boxster S Manual

Congrats man, i've always been super keen on a 987 Boxster S, or even a 996 Carrera. It's still on the cards for when my work/commuting arrangements are better suited for it. Out of interest, do you know how much the preventative IMS replacement would be?

If the IMS was not done (which the specialist will check this week), then I will get a detailed quote and I will DM you. It is advised that the IMS also be fixed when replacing the clutch, since it saves on labour to open everything up one time.

Besides IMS, there is also RMS and then the bore score issues too.

Besides that, not much else goes wrong on these cars. The condensers (in the front), the roof and suspension can give issues if not maintained properly.

The car is at the specialist currently and they will give me a detailed report.

I have now been watching Youtube videos on the 987.1 ans 987.2 for two days....
so desirable and underrated.

The Cafe9 report has good and bad points:

Good:
No signs of accident damage.
Body and paint still decent
Engine seems good.
Hard to say if IMS was replaced but there are no symptoms, so they not too concerned, especially given it is over 100,000km and no signs of issues. However, if the clutch is replaced then the IMS can be done one time.

Bad:
Clutch needs replacing and so does synchromesh.
Brakes discs are worn down below minimum. Discs and pads need replacing.

I signed the OTP and paid a deposit to the dealer last week, but added a line that says "subject to no major issues from PPI report". Well the brakes and clutch are major and need to be attended to.

The dealer will do his sums and come back to me on way forward. I was meant to originally take delivery this week, but let's see how he responds on these issues.

I am confident that we can come to some agreement.

So, depending on the particular engine model. On the 987.1 3.2 (there was also a 987.1 3.4 in 2007), the IMS replacement kit is about R8,000. Labour cost will vary, but they advise to do IMS when replacing the clutch, so labour is one cost.

Yeah, the issue isn't parts. it's literally 1 bearing. The issue is that it's a transmission out piece of work - hence why it's usually done with a clutch. Still an expensive job. Overseas you're talking R20-40k depending on the other niggles they discover.

Thanks for the feedback, could be worse I suppose! Hoping the dealer takes this into consideration and gets you on the road soon. Keep us updated :)

Not a bad report, keen to hear how the dealer responds to your subjection. if they decent which seems to be the case so far, then they should honour it

Quotes are:

Brake Discs/pads are R40k
Clutch is R28k.

Other smaller niggles (not critical, but stuff I want done at my own cost) are R30k

Dealer is looking to adjust the selling price for brakes and clutch.
If you can get that sorted and have an IMS done car for the prices you've been discussing it seems a very, very good outcome! Good luck, seems like you've found something solid here!

Not a bad synopsis. Would make sense to do the bearing and the clutch, and then have stress free motoring.
Why such a high price on the disks and pads? Are they a special size? Do they haveto be oem, or are there not any different brands in that size?

I was wondering the same, that seems obscenely expensive for what should be a relatively simple brake disk?

Front discs are R15k. Front pads are R6k.
Rear discs are R13k. Rear pads are R4k.
I don't see a seperate line for labour, so assume it is included in the prices above.

Well, after much discussion with the dealer... They offered to cut the price a small bit and not perform any critical work as quoted in the report.

The added cost of the brakes and clutch, even with the now discounted selling price, pushes the total cost to a base 987.2 level and that makes this deal unappealing to me. I still have to do IMS at my cost and add new tyres too.

The 987.2 is a better car and is more reliable too, so it makes no sense spending so much on a 987.1 S to get it to a 987.2 base level.

Anyway, I am going to hang tight and see what comes along down the line. There are good deals to be had if you wait.

At least, I learned a lot and am better prepared when the right car comes along.

The market is a bit crazy, even with 987.1 prices. Better value is to be had with the 986, but that car is already 20+ years old. Anyway, the search continues, slowly....

Shitty, but probably the right choice. Dealers likely bought themselves into a corner and were therefore not able to go lower. They will now certainly try palm the car off on someone less thorough than yourself.

Great decision bud! The right one will come along!

Out of curiosity, would this car pass a roadworthy inspection with the clutch and brakes in its current state?
