I had a chat to a guy at Eden tech in Sandton city about a screen protector. They have sheets of the protection film and a cutter that can cut to size. It’s the same stuff used on phones and Ipad screens etc. Worth a try to see if you can find one of the cell phone repair stores near you that may also have the same stuff.

On my wife’s JCW I had to do this as the idrive controller is too low down so using the screen is easier.
I bought a cheapie tablet screen guard and measured and cut to size then applied it.

It’s not perfect but when the screen is on, you can’t see any imperfections or fingerprints which was my main goal.

There is a company doing this though, I’ll try get the details and post.

I assume BMW would use Gorilla glass on an X5 screen, so need for further protection?

The glass itself is not the challenge on certain cars - on my Alfa the issue was the reflections with the android unit at certain times of day. I stripped off the screen and had it covered with an antireflective screen guard at one of the clear-coat mall pop up stores.

I also find that despite it being a touch interface, I still use the idrive 'mechanical' interface the most by far on the F90. I only really touch if I need to quickly access nav or mute on teams when using Carplay. In fact with the display off, you can literally see fingerprints just on that spot . If you are a heavy user of touch though, the oleophobic matte protector will work at reducing that as well.

@MR_Y as @TurboLlew says its more for the finger prints. I use the Touch Screen more than the mechanical controller.

BMW use Panzer glass. I bought a screen protector for my iDrive but it's for an F90 M5/G30 5 series. been looking to find someone to cut it to size if anyone knows? Even got a little M badge in the corner. Looks proper. I'll post the part number for it if anyone's interested, bought it off eBay.

So Rocket Auto Care In Edenvale are currently the only PPF installers I've come across that can do PPF on your piano black interior.
My own installer referred me to them for the interior as we all know ppf requires a wet solution for install so I have no idea how they're doing it.
Given the above I don't see why they can't do a screen guard cut to size.

I'm going to give them a shout when I'm back in Jhb next week so will report back here.
I use my iDrive controller all the time on the X3 to avoid marks on the screen so keen to see if they have a solution as it can be a pain while driving.

Small thread revival.

Took a flyer and purchased a tempered glass screen protector on AliExpress for the X3 in the first week of December for just under $10 with free shipping. It arrived last week at a post office near me. Customs was R70. It is surprisingly good quality and not very noticeable.
