Ideas for Roof box for X3 G01

Hi

So as some of you know, I struggle with boot space in my X3 G01 20d since I have a space saver spare wheel strapped in there.

I am considering a roof box but I am totally ignorant of what is out there in the market and what is good for my needs.

The roof box will need to carry mainly soft luggage bags and small/medium shopper bags. My suitcases can fit, Tetris style, around and over the spare wheel in the boot.

The roofbox will only be needed for long distance trips about 6 or 8 times a year.

Advice on fuel consumption impact (assuming this creates more drag) is also appreciated.

Thanks.

Not a massive negative impact on fuel consumption if you get the right bars and box.

Check for weight allowance and max speed rating.

Check if they come with straps that allows you to strap stuff down in the box.

Ensure it can open from both sides

Make sire it’s gloss black :)

Any brand recommended?
I know Thule is the gold standard

I have Thule. When I looked around they had the best options. The brand has a great reputation.

BMW does one. I didn’t go for it because it was limited to options/styles on the box and bars.

I see there is a CRR brand that Makro and Takealot do but I’m not sure about the quality.

Go Thule and don't look back, they cost a pretty penny but when you use other brands and compare them then you appreciate the: 1. build quality, 2. security features, 3. convenience features, 4. ease of use i.e. the weight of the actual box and removal/fitting onto the rails etc. Also the locking system is much more strudy on the Thule than any other brands.

This is purely from what I have experienced, Thule partners also sell their hired ones later on after a while for decent pricing.

Gloss Black FTW - just be careful when cleaning and storing it to keep it looking good.

Most of the oem roof bars are made by thule, same with the bike racks, just a different sticker on them.
Could be the same with the roof boxes

What about a towbar mounted luggage box? I feel they are more practical in terms of access to luggage as well as likely less drag = less wind noise and better fuel consumption (just my assumption)

This is an interesting option.
If I can find a stylish one, maybe worth looking into.

Bear in mind, you will likely lose both PDC and reverse camera functions.

Also looking into this and Thule roof box is hands down the best option but a decent kit costs more than my 1/2 ton trailer.

Correct about the PDC and most likely camera. Even with the empty bike rack PDC becomes null and void. It become terribly annoying.

I went through this exercise a few years ago. In the end what you pay for a roof box and the volume of space I just decided on buying a 5 foot trailer form Makro. I have not looked back.

More space, cheaper and more practical for me since I also like camping so it takes all my gear. It also caters better for my needs on the long distance journeys. Being a dad of 2 young adult daughters it helps. They usually take a suit case each, vanity case, lap top bag each and a few boxes of sneakers for "incase". Yes they don't wear half the stuff but they are happy so that means I get to be happy too.
