Hi Guys, I'm new here. I have an issue. So I have a 2006 BMW 530d A/T M-Sport and it has a burning smell upon start up. I've checked the coolant levels, and they're fine. I checked the dipstick and the engine level is moderate, round about where you'd expect it to be. I last drove the car 2 days ago and had no issues. Now when I start it up, I get a strong smell of burning and a bit of smoke. I don't what's burning, whether there may be an oil leak or belts burning. Don't know whether this is a common issue with the M57s. I'm terrified to drive the car and will wait to get a tow to a specialist. Any ideas what the issue may be? Thanks in advance.

Yes, also think it is the vibration dampener that has gone. Is the steering heavy? That is usually a sure sign that the dampener has gone. Also check for leaks around the injectors as that can also cause smoke and a smell of diesel burning, as that it what it is. Another thing it can be is that the exhaust manifold is cracked as that is a common problem with the m57 motor. The manifold is made from thin stainless steel with an outer and inner skin which cracks after many years and starts leaking exhaust gas. Shine a strong light on the manifold and you should be able to see the cracks if that is what is causing the smoke and smell.

Steering feels like normal BMW steering but there is a vibration when turning. Will have a look thanks. Useful info!
