F30 32d hi milage maintenance

Hi Guys,

I have a 2014 F30 320d auto with 165k, trouble free kilometers on the clock.

I am probably going to have to keep this vehicle for another 100k km's so am looking for some advice on preventative/advisable maintenance to be done.

I already do 10k oil change services at SMG, have serviced & flushed the cooling system, the brake system, all at SMG and also do tire rotation/alignment & balancing every 10k km's.

I am now looking into what else needs preventative maintenance attention and would be grateful for any advice.

Access to the BMW maintenance schedules would also be a great help if somebody could share this with me

TIA and happy motoring guys

Get the gearbox serviced at ZF, inspect the damper pulley and change out if needed.
other than that and with the maintenance you have in mind as stated above drivetrain should be solid for another 100,000km.

Id also check suspension, usual culprits at that mileage are shocks, control arms, tie rod ends, stabilizer links, ball joints etc.
if all looks good it isn't highly necessary as there is a good chance it was done previously.
check the service history.

call your nearest dealer, provide them your vin and they should give you all the history they have.

Thank you, in fact I forgot to add. The shocks were done roughly 10k km ago when I replaced all four tyres as well.

Thank for the heads up on the c'arms & t'rods etc, will get those looked at. I got the vehicle (off thsi forum!!) with 75k km's on teh clock so doubt they were done, so a check is never a bad thing

In fact when she goes for oil next week, I will get SMG to do a complete technical report and see what that shows up.

These are really great cars!!!!

My experience with diesels over 200k kms is that the alternator could be in need of new brushes. Have knowledge of two cars having worn brushes and gave all kinds of red lights on the dash and idrive due to battery dying because alternator was not charging. You can get brushes loose and is quite easy to replace as the part they fit into is easily removed from the back of the alternator.

Please can you advise where these can be purchased, I have looked everywhere for them - I can see the brushes in my alternator are worn.
I am in JHB.

When a friend of mine had the problem with his X5's alternator i took the old ones out and went to Midas where i got a pair of brushes almost the size of the old ones. Took them home and filed them down to size and fitted them. No problem.

I've taken the charging unit out how do I get the brushes out, just pull?
They are seemingly attached to little springs and one is worn quite a bit more than the other.

Uppper & Lowers where done at PointS. Montague Gardens.

I can send you a copy of the invoice if you would like to see the details. Drop me a PM with your email adress

I just bought the front/lower control arms for my F30 and with fanatics discount paid R4191.18 from ABM (that was the price in March - could be diff now). That was just parts for the two arms, I replaced them myself (easy if you have the right tools).

UPDATE - Booking made for gearbox service at ZF for Jan 2023.

Now to start understanding this whole story around EGR & CAT, so some insights would be appreciated as I am not into mods at all just into reliability & economy.

As said she has 186k km on the clock and I have noticed a slight power drop, but will see what happens once the g'box is done as that is also not as smooth as I have become used too.

Also do not fully understand the logic/need behind a replacement downpipe.

Neither the story around the swirl flaps/throttle body?

Would really appreciate some input from those who have done these on this vehicle, the reasons and the outcome?

So the reason for a downpipe is less pressure on the turbo to help the turbo in the vehicle last longer in basic terms as far as I understand.

EGR recirculates the exhaust gases back into the engine - removing this allows more clean air into the engine to mix with the fuel thus resulting in better performance.

I don't know much about the swirl flaps however I have found out that it's better to have them removed as there is chance they break with age and can cause quite a bit of damage to the engine. So it's replaced with a sort of plug once it's removed

However one the above EGR and Swirl flaps removed from the car it would need a software remap as it would trigger check engine light as the sense on those items are no longer there.

I had my wife's 320D fitted with a downpipe so far still planning to get the EGR and swirl flaps deleted and then the software done as well

All in all it helps with the reliability and lifespan of the car and as bonus you get better fuel economy and power as well

Thanks Deaglan29, all my research (and I do tend to OVER research!!) has indicated that these and a few other things should be done as a precautionary. I am chatting with the guys at DCS Motorsport here in CT and thier take makes prefect sense. I am probably going to get these done sooner rather than latter.

I do the same thing been researching stuff for my car as well for nearly a year now, found that DSC JHB has the hardware for the EGR and swirl flap deletes just need to decide on who to do the software
