discussion F56 JCW - 6 Speed Auto vs 8 Speed Auto

Hey guys/girls.

I’ve been looking at F56 JCW’s for a while and I’ve noticed that the pre 2018’s come with a 6-Speed Auto box, as opposed to the 8-Speed in the post 2018’s.

The price difference between the 2017 and 2018 models are quite significant.

I’d like to know from those with experience how the 6 speed boxes compare to the 8 speed.

All input is appreciated.

Get the 8 speed. It's a very different drive. The ZF8 is lightyears ahead in terms of quicker and smoother changes. Also LCI's come better specc'd.
I drove pre-LCI and LCI1 before pulling the trigger on the LCI2 for the wife.

Just a note that the pre-LCI sounds way better. The LCI's are loud and fun but just not as forthcoming as the pre-LCI in terms of exhaust note.

That begs the question - Do you think the ZF8 gearbox is worth the 70k+ price difference? (Provided everything else, spec-wise and mileage wise is the same)

Drive both and then make the call.

As a daily, I would say yes it’s worth it. Marginally lighter on juice also.

I've had both the 6spd and 8spd.

As mentioned above, the 8spd is way better, however you wont go wrong with either

Also, to note, there are other differences like upgraded HPFP and Internals on the LCi.

It’s a tough call. Once you accept that you’re willing to spend that much, you’re practically paving the road to buy an M240i 😂
100%.

So go test drive both, and then buy the B58 40i :D

So then, I had my Pre LCi JCW Hatch and the M240i at the same time. The JCW was loads more fun, M240 had the power, but the fun factor on the JCW is just something else.

But then again, I also traded my M4 Competition for a JCW Hatch LCi2 last year and did not miss the M4 🤣

I have an N55 at the moment so I might be leaning towards it actually. I just feel that the mini will be abit different (in a good way) and more efficient for daily traffic. There are other factors to consider such as the depreciation on the mini and I like to fidget with my cars. A dp + tune takes the b58 into m4 territory while spending a couple 100k less.

Did you track the cars or just use it on road?

Update, I took a drive in a pre-facelift and it was nice. The car is fun to drive, and this particular one had a downpipe installed. Sounds amazing. Having owned a GTI before, I’d say it feels abit less ‘planted’ but better in traffic. Nimble, small, responsive.

All that’s left to do now is try the M240 😜
