2011Bmw f10 530d android screen

So I bought a 2011 f10 530d in 2021 with 58000km. The car is a dream to drive, however the cabin lacked that modern feeling and phone connectivity.

So I decided to install a 12.3 inch android screen

I installed it myself, and it took me about 2 to 3 hours with frequent stops to check instructions on YouTube. It could be done in like 30 to 45min if you are experienced.

The android unit really does make the car feel more modern with wireless apple carplay and android auto. It does not look out of place, and sort of emulates the g30 screen.
There are some annoying bugs and gripes that I have with the unit, but I do feel it's worth it overall.

Yup, the 2011 530d is great mechanically, but outdated in terms of infotainment. The Android head unit really does freshen up the look and Android auto is really convenient using it as a daily.

I got the SD 662, with 6gb ram. Seems to be fast enough.

Build quality is (expectedly) not the best.
The screen brightness is not ideal on sunny days.
The connectors to the screen were causing a very annoying rattle which I eventually sorted out with some tape.
Tends to run warm.
Sometimes the audio doesn't start immediately until you open an app.
I had to use a gps splitter from the OEM gps cable to get better signal

Lol, it's nothing exciting, it's pretty much stock. I haven't done any mods, except for some coding.

Yes, base.

Yes, I believe 2012 models and below require connecting it to the aux connection in the arm rest.

I removed the panel with the gear selector, and ran the cable under. Then I brought it out in the arm rest.

Very keen on doing the same to my F10. It's a minefield of options out there. Any issues with customs? How long did it take for the unit to arrive?

No issues, it took about 2 weeks to courier, and the courier sorts it out.You still pay for customs though.

What made you go with the pop out in stead of the one that sits in the dash?

I generally prefer larger screens but I was also debating this when I ordered it. The "pop out" version is similar in style to the newer 5 series, so it doesn't look too out of place. Also, the unit is best navigated as a touch screen, so the screen being closer to the driver may be better ergonomically.

The down side may be that the glare will be greater than on the recessed version as it doesnt have the "hood" over it.

Update: everything is still working well, the rattles have not returned, so all is well!

It does get quite hot if it's in the sun for a prolonged period of time. Although it hasn't caused a problem yet, I don't think it's great for the longevity of the unit.

There are still occasional bugs where the wireless android auto doesn't work, and I have to plug my phone in, but overall still seems a great decision
