N55 drivetrain malfunction

Hi, guys need some help was driving home yesterday after work and accelerated from around 80km to 120km, dash board lit up with drive train malfucntion and engine was misfiring with Whie smoke coming from exhaust

DME codes attached, can anyone please help ky diagnose the problem

140001 - Combustion misfires, several cylinders: Fuel injection is switched off.
140010 - Combustion misfires, several cylinders: detected.
140301 - Combustion misfire, cylinder 3: Fuel injection is switched off.
140310 - Combustion misfire, cylinder 3: detected.
140501 - Combustion misfire, cylinder 5: Fuel injection is switched off.
140510 - Combustion misfire, cylinder 5: detected.
152308 - Super-knocking, cylinder 3: Fuel injection deactivation.
152D08 - Super-knocking: Injection switch-off.
201101 - DME, protection against tampering: Program or data manipulation detected.

12A308 - Oxygen sensor after catalytic converter, dynamics, from rich to lean: Slow response. - Had this on mine when my Catalytic converter was removed and cat fooler was fitted. So possible, your car had a DP and was removed without clearing codes.

So for the first two, I added just to give to forum some full Information

Car is flashed stage one and the catalytic converter is due to a dp being fitted

I just got back from bmw now and they're still to run diagnostics on the car but the service manager has indicated that there's a chance that the turbo has been blown

Car has been on software and hardware for about 40k km or so with regular (every 10k) spark plug, oil, etc. Changes

Also recently just done coils so I am bit concerned as to why so may cylinders decided to misfire all at once :(

Lots of white smoke won't just be an injector/coil/plug

Could indeed be the turbo as the likely culprit, but also check compression if not.

Hi thank you so much,

If you don't mind me asking, what's the life span on a turbo?

Also, I feel like I've narrowed it down to possibly one of the following if not a combination of these issues:

Blown head gasket
Fuel pump
Injectors
Turbo

If you don't mind me asking is there history of N55 compression issues and if so which part is most likely affected? I.e. Pistons, valves?

hi dude,

from personal experience i recommend you take your car to a reputable mechanic, i spent hours reading N54 forums to try troubleshoot my N55 misfiring.

something as simple as a sparkplug that is not correctly `gapped` or seated could be the root cease of misfires, compression is also a possibility.

what is your location?

I have now changed plugs, coils and tested the injectors

After changing plugs misfire cylinder 3 is no longer an issue

However misfire 5 is still running and I'm at my wits end with this car

I did a compression test and every cylinder is producing the same compression.. I still wasn't satisfied with the test so i stripped the car, I inspected the head gasket, cleaned the valves and checked pistons for damage and couldn't find anything

So my problems are now something else and I don't know which direction to go in

Is it:

Clogged downpipe
Damages O2 senor causing ECU to panic
Is it the turbo
What could it be?
Maybe it's the software

I've had the car checked by BMW, Bosch and my turning company but no one seems to be able to narrow the problem down

They keep making me chnage parts one by one only to find out we end up back at square one

Of anyone else has any thoughts I'm all open to ideas

Maybe chat to your tuner to get the stock file loaded on the car,that way you can rule out the software.
