E70 X5 3.0d

Hi all

So the SO is interested in an E70 3.0d. Are there any inherent issues with these cars as the oldest she likes is 11 years old and the youngest we can afford is 9 years old. I stand to be corrected as I believe the engines are relatively reliable.

I am sitting with that E70 here my bro, I recently did a DIY transmission, transfer case, front, and rear differential oil change on my machine.
This transmission oil change is recommended to be done between 80 000 and 120 000km.
The critical part that you need to check on that transmission is the transfer case, asking for a test drive around many corners at low speeds, and basically trying to feel small jerking coming from the drive train, especially when turning on the full left from a stand still.
These transfer cases tend to fail very early on these cars especially the motor that engages all wheel drive due to the design of that mechanism.

Thank you Maduna. I'm taking it to ZF to service the gearbox and satisfy myself that everything is okay. I need to get used to driving a diesel now. I usually start the car and drive off. There's a long descent about 1km away which results in the car hitting 2500rpm. Not sure this is healthy for a cold engine and transmission.

Sorry for coming back so late, I was hooked up on another E90 that was bought from an auction but it is messed up pretty bad.
Man, I am old school, by that I mean, I still warm up all my cars before taking off, especially on a cold start, doesn't matter the urgency.
I once read from another forum that an engine that is equipped with a turbocharger needs to circulate that oil very well before going up to higher revs. I will suggest doing the same if you're planning to keep that motor for a bit longer.

Sorry for coming back late.
No need to apologize in my opinion as the content is still talking about the X5
I went directly to ZF in Germiston for the transmission oil, those guys made me buy a whole lot of 10 liters of that oil but I drained out roughly about 7 liters, the procedure says you should fill up 500ml more if you've got a transmission oil cooler. For the transfer case and both differentials, I went to BMW and they gave me 1 liter for each and you will roughly drain out not more than 600ml from each.

Let me know if you need more info on that service because it is a bit involved especially when it comes to taking transmission oil temperatures.

Yes it is. Still undecided about whether to mod this one. Afraid that it will get messed up. Haven't had a good experience with mods and VW

I've always liked those Jettas. What's the km?

You can mod the R...that 1.8T engine is pretty strong and reliable just don't open it up and forge etc...then they start behaving badly

Happy New Year everyone. @maduna mine has started making a loud noise coming from the rear, like a grinding noise, I'm 95% sure the Diff is near toast, I say near as the car still moves but the noise is definately getting worse so I stopped driving it. I see you mentioned ZF, never heard of these guys, how reliable are they, can they help me fix this mess reasonably priced? I'd like to service the gearbox and replace the mecatronic sleeve/seals which I already bought. Plus do the Transfer Case service. Kindly advice or alternatively point me to the right direction.

@Madejagsie , beautiful car man, that looks on that model really don't age even today. I have the 2009 model and damn how I wish I opted for the LCI model instead.
