F30 3 vs 4 Grand Coupe F36 vs F10 vs 6 Grand Coupe F06

Hey everyone!

Been a while since I have posted here, and once again I would like to pick your brains again. I will try my best to paint a picture so you know where I am coming from.

(P.S Please gloss over the politics) Since the horrible looting in the country my wife and I have made the decision to move to the UK next year as my mom was born there. And being a car guy I am obviously already looking what to get over there.

After driving my Lexus IS350 F Sport now for almost 20k km now I will comment that I definitely miss BMW and will be making the move back to BMW when I reach UK soil. The Lexus although it has been supremely reliable, relatively low running costs and better interior than the equivalent 3 series I constantly find myself yearning for the driving experience of a BMW, namely a turbo diesel one. With the Lexus I constantly find myself getting more and more frustrated with the gearbox/engine that never utilizes the powerband of the car correctly, and even when I tell it to downshift manually in sport it's not the same as having a sorted gearbox like my X3 or 330D had. If Lexus had thrown the ZF8SP in from my ex X3 it would transform it, as with this Toyota gearbox just puttering around town the car feels underpowered until you floor the throttle because it's always miles off the powerband of the car which only comes alive at 4400rpm, and sometimes if its at say 2500rpm and I floor it then it doesn't change down unless I do it manually, once it comes on power it is proper quick but the overall drive is just not what I want anymore, with both of my BMW's when I floored is whether in D or S it changed down and gave me exactly what I wanted.

Moving to the UK means I basically get a do-over and SWAMBO has given me free reign to buy anything I want provided it has 4 doors and a decent boot. Being a turbo diesel guy I am spoilt for choice over there.

Here are my options which are all around the same price surprisingly and at around the same mileage:
2014-2016 335D Xdrive
2013-2016 535D
2012-2015 640D Gran Coupe
2014-2016 435D Gran Coupe Xdrive

All have the same 230kw 630nm engine, the 3 and 4 being AWD and the 5 and 6 being RWD.

All of these options go for around 15-20k Pounds and around 95000-105000km on the clock.

What would you guys choose and why? Is the F10/F06 interior much better than the F30/F32?

I plan to keep the car for around 5 years.

Any inputs would be greatly appreciated!

For me it will definitely be the 640D Gran Coupe bud! It's just beautiful.

The only downside I would see is the size in terms of parking etc. if that's an issue.

The 6 series feels longer and bigger than all those cars, however it does feel premium and it’s more luxurious.
I have a friend with a 6 series and he wishes he had my F10 for practicality reasons.

Whilst I really enjoy my F10, it’s a lot quieter on the road, reduced noise vs F30 and also a plush ride, I sometimes miss the spirited drives from the F30. Fortunately, I have an e46 when the urge comes.

In terms of value retention and looks, I’d opt for the 4 series over the 3 series, unless it’s the anniversary version.

All the best!

The F06 640d would be a great choice if rear room is not a major consideration. It's not cramped, but it's not exactly 5-series levels of space. Looks wise the Fxx generation 6-ers have all aged really well :D

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I have narrowed it down to the F10 or F06, the 335d is cheaper but for poverty spec version with literally no options, the F10 or F06 for the same money has tons tons more equipment.

The 435d is the most expensive of the lot and I have ruled it out because I don't think it is as good value.

That being said, would the F10 or F06 platform be any more unreliable then the F30? They are practically identical underneath so I doubt it but perhaps those who have owned those platforms could set the record straight.

I owned a f12 650i and it was very reliable during my 3 years of ownership. Engine troubles are the most common reliability issue but that’s in the petrol V8s. You should be safe with the diesel. General maintenance is affordable and only things like dynamic drive and EDC would be more expensive if they fail, but then you should get a warranty to cover those.

Reliability I think should be the same, just maintenance cost of wear & tear items like brakes, suspension etc would be more expensive on the 5/6 than the 3 series.
