discussion F15 vs E70 LCI X5

The new current model looks dope and different to the prior models and so is the price.

F15 looked more like an evolution to E70 but seems lost some of the stance from E70.

Anyways, who has owned, had experience and / or driven the two and how do these compare?

Is it worth getting the F15 over the E70?
Depreciation curve is at its lowest on E70 and sells at nearly 50% cost of F15, though tech wise seems dated.

So I purchased an E70 LCi at the beginning of this year and I was in a similar Dilemma.

I purchased a 40d Msport which was fully loaded with 85k on the clock. The Equivalent F15 would have run me around 300K more and 1 year of motorplan left which I could not justify even for the tech.

My E70 has pro nav, voice control, 360 degree camera, towbar, power tailgate, Paddle Shift Etc etc etc which didnt leave me wanting for much.

I test drove a few f15s before making the purchase and to be honest the drive was not dramatically different with the exception of the M50d which was really just a powerhouse.

As you have said I Depreciation curve is at the bottom end and I was happy making the purchase knowing I could probably let her go for around what I had paid in a year or so. I did pay a premium for mine due to mileage, condition & Spec but I really have no regrets :D its been a perfect daily driver for me.

F15s are now dipping into the low 400s, high 300s and this is for shocking examples but I think the next two or 3 years will be tough on used values and the market is flooded.

Thanks man for comprehensive feedback, I have parked next to a F15 and I must admit it’s back side is a sore point vs the E70

It has X3 F25 accents

Only 1 person with feedback?

Any others ? F15 owners, are you happy? Are you feeling like you are driving an oversized F25 X3?

I'd like to replace the F25 20d with an F15 30d but the only ones within budget are out of or nearing end of plan and that is one dark hole that I don't wish to jump into. 😱

I've been looking at the E70s too, especially the 30d/40d. I am abit concerned about suspension and transfer case issues though, but they are at the sweet spot in terms of value for money right now.

TBH I haven't heard of many Transfer case issues locally with the exception of a vehicle on aftermarket wheels where the setup was completely different to OEM.

Air Suspension issues are usually Bag Related and those have come down dramatically in price.

Engine Pretty Bulletproof, Gearbox excellent ( 8speed), Suspension is a bit hard on Msport vehicles but you can live with it.

To be honest one of the biggest costs are Tyres - Read R5.5k + per Rear and always having to change both per axle.

Sorry cant help here with ownership info... can make an alternative suggestion to drive an equal year model Touareg in 3.0 or 4.2 v8D for some perspectives.

Good luck with the hunt...

I have driven an E70 when i considered getting a 30d earlier this year and I have driven more often my brother-in-law's F-series X5M. Besides the technology, what I have really enjoyed is the consistency of the design to keep the space within these vehicles. The e-series was softer however the X5M is still damn comfy too...but then again I am also coming from a daily M135i on HnR and lowered profiles.

The size didn't bother me in both vehicles...they are both easily drivable and enjoyable even with parking. When I drove the X3M and the X4M, I was impressed with the interior sizes and the get up and go on them due to sizes...however the X5s seem to be more planted given the bulkier body, weight and obviously wider track.

As many have said above, the budget is the deciding factor especially against mileage, year model and condition. The E70s are hard to find in great condition...F-series obviously much easier BUT if you o get a good E70, grab it!!! Bang for buck a 100 times over!

I sold my F25 X3 for a E70.

One thing that I miss on the E70 is the keyless start, annoys the shit out off me to get out of the car, close the doors and the key is still in the ignition.
I missed the 8speed gearbox but XHP sorted that out for me but still think the car will be lighter with a 8 speed box.

Other than that there's nothing pulling me back to the F25 X3(except for the nitrous pulls obviously)

Space, comfort, ride quality, everything else is still better in the E70.

I'm sure that the F25 and F15 is miles apart and that the F15 have way more luxury but that's just my experience

The E70's are brilliant. My cousin had purchased a 2007 3.0d Exclusive new and later added the lovely and very rare 21inch style 128 wheels and the front/rear apron (pics below). Had the pleasure of driving it regularly and it was an amazing all rounder and very comfortable even with the low profile tyres. It was sold in 2010 at around 60k kms while still under motorplan.

Then the director at my previous workplace had a 2009 3.0d M Sport which I also got to drive regularly. It was kept until 265k kms and gave no issues at all. Was serviced at agents according to the indicator and no preventative maintenance whatsoever-director had the "if it ain't broken, don't fix it" approach. So I can only imagine how much longer they can go for when taken extra care of.

Overall absolutely solid vehicles with the biggest cost being tyres. The 21s were close to 40k a set for runflats iirc with the rears being 325 wide and they were only available in Dunlop at the time.

My director later got an F15 for his wife but bar the tech updates always said he preferred the E70.

Okay I’m going against the general heading of comments on this thread. I had the 3.0d LCI E70 and now have the F15 M50d. At the time I loved the E70 but there were a few irritations, mainly very harsh ride (m-sport package with 19”) as well as numerous squeaks / rattles which became quite irritating over time. Apart from that it was an awesome car. Bought a F30 335i after that but missed the space and swiftly moved back to a SUV again. This time the F15 as mentioned.

In my opinion no comparison AT ALL! F15 light years ahead in build quality (forget performance because should be similar for same engine), ride comfort etc. It is just so much of a better space to be in. My X5 has 20” wheels and the ride is miles better than the 19’s I had on the E70. I have a friend with one of those fancy Lexus big thingys as well as another friend with a Porsche Cayenne of some sorts and both say the ride on the X5 is far better than their cars. As well as the led lights (which are awesome btw)

Apart from that no issues at all in terms of maintenance on the F15 apart from normal servicing over 2 years ownership . The E70 had a gearbox replacement at 90k at a cost of R100k luckily under m/p, apart from that rock solid over the ownership period
