Hey guy

I'm a new member. Currently on a different brand but will be looking an SUV later on...X3 (probably) or Land rover Freelander 2.2 SD4 (not sure about this though)

Welcome.
Freelander is one of the most unreliable cars ever made - stay away.
X3 is a solid bet and many happy owners on this forum.

Thanks MR_Y. Surprisingly only seen positive reviews about it but advise duly noted.

My wife had a 2008 Freelander 2.2 SD4 HSE when we started dating.

The car was looked after well, serviced when required and never even saw a gravel road.

Between 150 000km and 190 000km the car basically fell apart. The turbo had to be replaced, rear diff broke, radiator started leaking, aircon and power steering pump broke etc etc. The car spent so much time at the shop we basically knew everyone at the dealership on 1st name basis.

Only consider to buy this if you like oil on your hands and if you like to fix things when they break. If you are a Land Rover fan, this is perfect for you.

If going Freelander try get the last version, think it’s late 2012 onwards (rather 2013).

The door handles share the same colour as the vehicle body.....there were further improvements therein

Yes, thanks VinceM, and 2013 has Xenons and Navigation, although 2012 is still not bad. Thanks bud.

After some random searching, stumbled upon a 2015 Volvo XC60 D4 Excel, took interest and signing on it soon. One thing that popped on this car is the cambelt change that is quiet pricey...advises are gladly welcomed

Just confirm if this is the 4 cylinder version or the older tech 5 cylinder. I may be biased, but the older tech D4 (5 cylinder) is proven to be more reliable and more tuneable for more power.

Also, I assume that a 2015 XC60 D4 would be the FWD version? So, something to bear in mind if bundu bashing

I think it's a 5 cylinder and also is indeed a FWD, thanks bud. Reviews are relatively positive in those motors

If you have navigation, you should be able to update it from the Volvo website for free. See here https://www.volvocars.com/za/support/downloads/maps/mca/africa-middle-east

Also, check if your model had a Volvo Tracker unit fitted (Volvo partnered with Tracker in 2015 to offer tracking devices under a 5 year subscription). Even if the subscription has expired, you should have the unit and the emergency button installed in the car. Easy enough to get it reactivated if you want to, for R199pm. I have mine activated to keep track of my car on the Tracker App - especially, if my wife is driving alone. If you don't want Tracker, then it is worthwhile just checking that the existing unit is not drawing charge from your battery uneccesarily.

All 2015 60 series cars (XC60 and S60, V60) came with either Lumar anti smash and grab or extra laminated Saint Gorbain glass windows. I stupidly fitted aftermarket smash and grab film over my windows, not knowing that I had the extra protection already in place.

One last thing, on the XC60 (with sunroof) there is a known issue of water leaking into the front footwell. Check if this has been addressed under the Motorplan already. If you have no sunroof, no worries.

If you are in Gauteng, and do not want to service at a dealership, contact Craig Paul from Race Toys (you can Google him). He specialises in Volvo maintenance and servicing.

Thanks MR_Y - this is very helpful especially the smash & grab thing as they wanted to include it in my OTP and i refuted it(car not at Volvo dealership). they say "The smash and grab gets charged because most of the vehicles especially 5 years and older there is some defects in the smash and grab where we are required to redo the smash and grab"
It's also has a Netstar unit which they say "we just charge a transfer fee as most of our vehicles are fitted with Netstar therefor the client saves by not paying for the unit and only the transfer fee".

Will check the sunroof issue with Volvo..I'm told service interval is every 20 000km but being a diesel i suppose it should be every 10k km, right?

Is there a reason why you decided against a X3 ?

Hi brads7 - No particular reason at all. X3 was actually on top of my list but couldn't see one on my budget with "low" km..and SO was sold when i showed her the Volvo...our first SUV and very first Diesel car.

Volvo models since 2015 are all 20,000km service intervals. Craig Paul (the guy I mentioned earlier) recommends every 10,000km oil change for diesels. I spoke to a Volvo technician about this - he said that Volvo changed to a different type of Castrol oil formulation since 2015 and this allows longer intervals. Craig says this is BS.
