Auto Box Fluid Change

Hi guys, I just bought a 2012 320d with the 8 speed auto box. It has 125k on the clock and I highly doubt the gearbox fluid has ever been changed. I plan on keeping this car for 10 years or more and I want it to run smoothly.

I've heard about ZF gearbox services and the great work they do. Does anyone know if there are any specials coming up for gearbox oil changes?

Hi, ZF test the current gearbox oil and check fault code first.
If it's above the limit and having fault on gearbox, no oil change is recommended.
And ZF service is great in Joburg!

I went to ZF and was told that I should keep the oil and might need a rebuild in 100 000km time (currently 142000km). They changed the plastic sump and re inserted the old oil because new oil will cause slippage. Those plastic sumps supposedly crack with time.

meh... money pits. Next time, I get a manual box.

Moral of the story, dont wait for specials before you go. It might be too late.

Fair enough. I'm not gonna wait years or anything, but I don't do massive mileage at the moment, so I don't mind waiting a couple months to get it done.

Good job for wanting to get it done!

Best bet - phone CT Branch and ask if there is any special currently for Fanatics members. They do have a few times a year from what I saw, and It is considerably cheaper.

They are incredibly professional [if JHB branch is anything to go by] so I think you will get a friendly, helpful voice on the end of the call.

Awesome, thanks for the advice!

Ya, I just had my other car's fluid changed and although the mechanic said it wasn't too dirty, it was still a good idea to have it done. But with the beemer costing about 4x as much, I'd like to save some money where possible, hahaha.

How expensive was the current oil service?

I need to take in my cab.
My Cerato gearbox fluid change was +-1800 I believe. It wasn't too bad. A lot less than the BMW which is about 6k.

Why do you say that their professionalism lacks credibility? I found that they made an effort...
(although I find that they are stingy with the wi fi in the waiting area)

Not sure how you made that interpretation and conclusion?

I have nothing but praise and recommendation for the Jhb ZF guys (as my post clearly states?)

They were incredibly knowledgeable, helpful, friendly and delivered a fantastic service. I loved the experience and learnt a bit more about the box.

:)

Sorry for sounding like a wise arsed grandma nazi troll but its time for some English lessons.
Any time you have the prefix "in" before a word it signifies a lack or absense of something

Incomplete (lacking completion) Teacher: YOUR HOMEWORK IS INCOMPLETE!
Incompetent (lacking competency) Me: YOU BMW MECHANICS ARE INCOMPETENT! (sorry BMW, I am picking on you)
Inconsistent (lacking consistency) Me: YOU POLITICIANS ARE INCONSISTENT WITH YOUR SERVICES!
Incoherent (lacking coherency)
Incontinent (lacking the ability to contain)
Incredible (lacking credibility)

The prefix IN comes from Latin meaning "not"...

Must be an Edward Bernays thing or something... Dunno.

On a side note, is the vent valve replaceable on these gearboxes? I hear that they get clogged and cause problems?

Are you referring to me saying 'incredibly' professional @Mister ?

If so, sorry for the confusion. I'll make sure to use simpler words like 'very' next time. Just for you.

I would say 'in the future', but I assume you will interpret that as negative as well? :)

i see what you did there...but it has evolved over the centuries and is even found used loosely in literature in the 1500's (y)

if i plan to pick up a diesel BM in future i will make sure to take it to them first before purchasing...i always assumed the 8 speed would be ok to just take in at 140k whatever for a service.

With these 6 or 8 speed gearboxes it all varies. I have seen some cars with 100k mileage and the box is already out of spec and wont be serviced by ZF and have seen others with 150-180k which have not been serviced and are still within spec

Definitely a good option.

When buying/looking at one, you can also get someone with Xhp to just scan it for you :)

Will bring up any faults and believe you can check pressure and filling timing as well. Very quick and well worth doing!

incredibly
/ɪnˈkrɛdɪbli/
Learn to pronounce

adverb

  1. 1.
    to a great degree; extremely.
    "Michele was incredibly brave"

  2. 2.
used to introduce a statement that is hard to believe; strangely.
    "incredibly, he was still alive"
The in- prefix in incredible did initially imply "not," as the original definition of incredible was "too extraordinary to be believed," thus "not credible." However, over time the meaning of incredible weakened and is now taken to mean "amazing." This is similar to the weakening of the word unbelievable.
