Advice on Honda NC 750 X bike

Hi guys, I'm looking at getting this bike and it will be my first. Looking at a used one with less than 10000km on the clock and would like to know if these are reliable bikes or not. What should I look out for and will this be a good a bike to learn how to ride with? The only bike I have ridden before is my mountain bike and now I'm looking at something fast but not too fast to kill me, so I guess the 750 is small enough to just put me in hospital and not kill me when things goes south :fencelook:

Hi Bud,

The NC750X is a wonderful bike, the parallel-twin has a 270-degree firing order so it gives you a nice little grunt. Its an easy bike to live with and quite fuel efficient. Plus its got the little frunk to keep your helmet in. Its the ideal commuter bike.

I have yet to see anyone complain of any reliability issues, it is a Honda after all.

I would suggest you take it for a test drive and see if it suites your riding style. If you're looking for something a bit more fun, perhaps look at an MT-07

they are awesome commuters , and have some oomph when you need it but it's not going to snap your neck back so dont expect warp speed.

they are super reliable as hell , general maintenance but nothing significant.

Hey Lebofa.

As a rider from the age of 8yrs old on offroad scoots with some success along the way let me dismiss the notion that a 750 can't kill you. A badly operated 50cc can do that. :=):

But that out the way welcome in advance to the world of biking... It's awesome. I recently got the missus and I another KTM. This time the 1290T Super Adventure. It's great to spend quality time together and we get to chat over the intercom as we're riding the back roads and D roads of KZN.

With this in mind my advice is to decide firstly what you want to do with the bike ie is it to scratch an itch for speed and adrenalin or to commute. Strikes me as the former in your case. The next thing to consider is whether you want to put your knee on the tar doing your best Marquez impression or to have the flexibility to see where that dirt road goes.

This was the reason for us choosing the Adventure bike route. Please believe me when I say that 1290T with 160hp has more than enough adrenalin inducing power but at the same time can be ridden up Sani Pass without breaking a sweat.

If it's pure road you are after then decide whether you want "sit up and beg" riding position (like the naked bikes / adventure bikes) or do you want to hunker down behind a screen in your leather race suit.

Okay edit to the above, I am now on my laptop and have googled Honda NC750x and see that its a quasi adventure bike type scoot. So the below comment is no longer relevant


Once you have a firm view of what you are looking for in terms of usage of the bike then the right bike will come into focus.


Adventure
Anything from the BMW 800 through Triumph and on to the bigger BM and KTM. In this regard I deliberately left out the KTM 790 as in my opinion it's just too offroad biased and is uncomfortable on longer road sections when you're not standing on the pegs "Dakar style" :=):

I've stayed with the above because a couple of my mates who've had Honda bikes recently have had issues getting spares. Not saying all Honda's but something to consider. I subscribe to the view that none of the offerings of the "mainstream" manufacturers are bad bikes. All have strengths and weaknesses and its down to personal preference I think.

thank you all for the advises, what an eye opener. I was looking for something that I can use on weekends, should be relatively fast, comfortable on tar road and must be able to do off road once in a while. I thought of Naked bikes, the kawasaki z1000 in particular, but I don't want to die young. Will check the Adventure bikes and MT-07, maybe take a test ride before pilling the trigger. My budget is R90k
I see there is a naked bike KTM 1290 and adventure bike. Now I'm more confused, KTM 1290 super duke, kawasaki z1000 and Yamaha MT-07 looks awesome and fast :fencelook:

Im on my 2nd Tiger, road is fun but there is something i cant refuse and that is a dirt road the leads to places i haven't been too.

Quick story:

Last Sunday i washed my bike, she is brand new, standing there all shiney and sexy like.
I decide to go for a ride, so i head out towards the block house, take a left to the suikerbosrand area, there was some protest or something so i turned back.

Cruising along, i see this dust cloud in the distance, i say to myself " myself, you just washed this thing, DONT be a retard..."

Drop a gear and off i go to see where the dust is coming from.

The tar ends and i stop, looking around for a sign, pull the phone out to check the map.
I see this "road" goes from the block house all the way to Lenasia!

next thing i know im putting the bike in offroad mode and im fishtailing into the unknown.

Got back after two hours and the bike was brown :roflol:

BUT i had a massive smile on my face !!

Moral of the story i guess is, speed isnt every thing when it comes to bikes.

As WIDEOPN-X3 has said, Welcome to the world of two wheels, life as you know it is about to change.

Reading your posts it seems like you would go off-road so dismiss all the naked bikes as they are not meant for anything but road, adventure bikes are what you are after, all the bikes you mentioned(Mt-07, Z1000 and especially the superduke) will not do off-road with their street tires and suspensions.

With your budget you will be able to pick up a nice f800 BMW or even an older R1200 GS, Truimpth Tiger or if you lucky a KTM 1050 or 1190.

Now just back to the fact that you have not ridden before, get some training in any way shape or form, any bike can kill you if you so don't think you are out of the woods on a smaller bike, things happen in the blink of an eye so be careful out there.

Guys, she has already given me a go ahead but on condition that I get one that is safe or one that is not going to kill me. We have two friends who got killed in motor bike accidents and she doesn't want that.

Hi All, just an update, 2020 came in with covid 19 and had to delay the purchase of a bike. Now I'm happy to report that I finally pulled a trigger on a brand new 2021 Yamaha MT-09. The bike slot between the MT-07 and the MT-10 which Yamaha decided not to import. I'm already planning minor mods as I do not like the tail on this bike and luckily there is a tail tidy available.
