Brake Pads

Good day all

I have a BMW 320i F30 (Out of MP). Last week my service indicator was showing 4700km to next service, which shows as brake pads. This week, after doing maybe about 450km, It is showing the service as required in the next 1600km. Has anyone experienced this?

The service info is also showing the other sets of brake pads as needing replacement in 5000km. I am thinking it best to replace both in one go (avoid a double labour cost) as I'll take it to a qualified BMW mechanic who does work for himself as well.

With this in mind, I got a quote from BMW for the pads at:
R2157 - Front
R1553 - Rear

I also got a quote on Pagid pads at:
R775 - Frontget a quote for non-bmw
R620 - Rear

And the sensors from BMW are priced at R377 - front and R450 rear. I didn't get a quote for non-BMW sensors.

Can anyone advise on using the Pagid pads, as they seem much more reasonably priced? Or is there merit in keeping to OEM pads? I am not quite sure who manufactures the BMW OEM pads.

Also, would it make a difference if I get the sensors from BMW or not? I assume they would be a bit cheaper for non-BMW sensors.

And a final question, is it necessary to replace the discs as well, or is it fine to just do pads? On my VW I usually just do pads. My BMW discs seem fine, a slight ridge on the lip, but nothing major in my opinion, and current braking is still very effective.

Thanks

OEM BMW pads are now TRW, previously used to be Textar/Jurid. You should be able to get TRW from Imcomex and Textar from Torre Auto Parts.

I would go for good aftermarket pads, just purchased Textar for my E90. The brake sensor should be around R150 from Goldwagen for Surebrake, which is the route I would go (and most others). If the sensor hasn't been triggered yet, you can reuse the existing sensor, if you cut and join, but for R150... :fencelook:

Run your fingers over the disc surface and if it has lots of uneven ridges, then its probably due for a change.. The slight lip is fine, provided the surface is fairly smooth. My mate at BMW said the discs aren't badly priced, if you need to go that route.. I doubt your discs would be shot if you've just come out of plan, but if you need discs, Imcomex can source Meyle discs at reasonable prices.

Thanks KPM_330

I'll contact them, and see what they quote. Is the TRW the best one to use then (OEM manufacturer)? Are the Pagid ones any good? Reasoon I ask is I see on the Imcomex website, they also stock Brakesure parts, and those I found were even cheaper than Pagid, but am not sure on their quality and reliability

Thanks

I have surebrake on my daily utility....they brake very well in normal conditions.
I have ATE up front and they squeel, im not happy with the squeel. Even used copper slip last weekend to try and sort it out...no go. Issue must be the compound used.

To come back to your question, i have read decent reviews on the Pagid. They should be perfectly fine for everyday driving.
If i were you i would replace them myself and save on cost of labour. Very easy to change.

For my e90 it originally had the Textar pads, they good pads with no brake noise but they do produce a lot of brake dust.

When it was time to change I went for ATE pads all around.

For the brake sensors i got the surebrake from Goldwagon in Durban. It was R87 each (front & rear)

The ATE pads will give you slight brake noise when the car is almost coming to a stop, i knew from past experience it would do this but chose to go with this brand as its a decent brand with minimum brake dust given off.

Stopping power with the ATE is just as good as to how the car previously felt.

I have found that ATE is a very hard wearing pad which damages the discs and that damn brake squeal!

Textar is top notch, that if you can find suppliers[/u]

i stick with OEM purely because it lasts longer, does not squeak and comes with a guarantee

My mechanic recommended Surebrake, Metelli or Febi for my F30.

Problem is that there are various options available and it is difficult to identify which is the correct replacement without taking in a sample to the spares shop - in my case for the F30 320i MSport, there are 4 different options for the front discs:dunnoanymore:

Thanks everyone. Your feedback is much appreciated.

I am awaiting feedback from my mechanic as well and will then make a final decision, although at the moment I am leaning towards OEM pads, and looks like the discs are still fine. due to the front still reading 4000km + for a service, I will look at only doing the rear for now.

Thanks

Hi vjx,

I found them at Goldwagon. But I would suggest if you need pads, try the new vendor as mentioned above. The service is excellent, and I would say it is best to stick to the OEM. I heard they are best for braking power, as well as the fact that they don't make any squeaking noise :smilebounce:

Textar is cheap if bought from Torre Auto Parts, I paid just below R400 for my E46 325ci,
Called Autozone, quoted me approx R1000 for pads.

for my F25 though, I just bought OE parts from BMW Menlyn, I think going forward that's the route I'll follow

Thanks. I've got your point.
The only only thing I don't like from OEM pad is DUST in front rims.
