Z4M Pop Sound - Front suspension

It might be the cross brace in the engine bay, the bolts at the centre section need to be torqued. It is a common disease on Z4's, my car had a creaking noise from the dash area that was fixed this way.

You can do it yourself with a 13mm spanner, there is no need to take it to a workshop. You tighten the two bolts in the centre at the rear of the engine just below the wipers. For good measure, you can also torque up the bolts that hold the braces to the shock towers.

Hi Sirhan, I recall talking to you about this. I also at first imagined it to be 'normal'

Once I have my car back I will have a look at the bolts and hopefully supply an answer :)

I had the same issue. Going over bumps or turning at an extreme angle would produce a loud metal pop or clank sound from the front. It could very well be front control arms. Either get BMW to check the control arms out, or get the car up on a lift and let a suspension shop have a look.

If it is indeed the control arms/bushings, you will notice the steering seems less precise and at higher speeds the steering wheel sometimes wonders slightly.

Thanks for the replies guys, I did what Blue Shirt recommended and tested the car out on a few bumps. I tightened the strut bolts at 41nm.

The noise seems to have gone ...... I hope it stays this way.
Will let you know the outcome in a few days.

I also took my car to the glen today, I know the guys pretty well there and respect what they say but unfortunately they did not know what the issue was

There is a factory defect on the engine mounting bolts which I will check if the issue persists. Control arms will be checked after that.

Andy, if your car does the same then ... yeah from what I hear .... it is not normal.

Will keep you posted, thanks

I am satisfied that the problem is fixed, it is amazing what a difference a strut can cause. Would you believe me if I said that the front end feels more precise now and the steering a bit more heavy. . . . . . :)

BMW offer a strut from shock mounting to shock mounting that does not sound like a bad idea now. I dont know why they did not just install it as standard. :thumbdo:
