Z puked coolant, mech says nothing wrong?

Hi all, happy Friday!

Following up on my introductory / purchasing thread of my new-to-me 2006 2.5i, as some might know I had a small issue on Tuesday. Sitting in hectic traffic in 30C heat and stopping/starting for probably 45 minutes.

When I got home I smelled coolant, so I checked and there was about half a liter of it in the belly-plate under the expansion tank side. I immediately thought it was the tank as that's what seems most common. So I started to take it all apart, drained the fluid, took the tank, the mounting plate and the hoses in that area off and took them to the workshop for inspection.

I could see nothing wrong but I know plastic cracks can "dissapear" when there is no pressure. So I put some stops/fingers in place around the openings of the bottle and pumped it up to 1 bar, it was hissing around the lower pipe fitting, the small one that has no clip. So I figured the o-ring was toast, found one in my collection that fit and replaced it.

I felt uneasy with the repair because it's early days and I don't trust the car yet, so decided to ask dealer to step in.

They DROVE the car 100km to their mech (Nige Auto in Benoni) and say it was fine all the way there, mech confirmed nothing wrong. I asked them to do a proper pressure test so will see what happens then...

I remember when I got the car that I looked in the fill bottle and saw it looked a little low, so I topped it up, but the float pin seemed like it was sticking, I played with it and got it to somewhat pop up, but to get to the cold fill level, the coolant needed to be almost at the top of the bottle opening.

Could this have been my fault? Overfilling it and then it puked out the excess? I'm kak paranoid as this is a new car, the highest mileage I've ever had on any car, and I really take around 6 months before trusting a car anyway. Did I over-react?

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance! :thumbs:

I assume this is the M54 engine and cooling system. Its expensive but for ease of mind and preventative measures I would overhall the entire cooling system as various parts will start to fail.

Possible causes:
(1) Expansion Tank;
(2) Expansion Tank Cap;
(3) Hoses.

You do know that you dont just fill up the reservoir tank when coolant is low :=):

There is a bleeding procedure that you need to do, for it to be properly done otherwise it will like you said, spill out. Made that mistake myself twice :fencelook: and ended up babying the car back home 3 hours doing 6 short street blocks

Thanks guys, yeah I bled it as per BMW, it wasn't emptied/bled until after the problem and after I bled it it was faultless for the 100km trip to Benoni (driven by the dealership employee) I also made sure to open the heater valve and make sure the heating was consistent etc. I always make sure I know what I'm doing so this was not the issue.

@ChrisBrand, I do plan on replacing the tank and cap this month (approx R2000 from BMW Northcliff)
And then systematically do all the hoses/sensors the following two months (approx R3000 for the top and bottom hoses and R2000 for level switch and mounting plate) all OEM.

Still odd though that I could make it puke coolant but they cannot...

Also, I've been driving it really nicely, not racing it... much. But seriously I've been babying it, until I know it's not gonna explode on me.

Update, indy says they found two hoses that look suspicious under pressure, they will replace, dealer will pay, but I'll need to spend the weekend without her.

Upset is not the word. I REALLY wanted to spend some time with her.
