X5 F15 3.0D Msport - Preventative Maintenance

Hi Fanatics.

I have had my X5 F15 3.0D Msport since 2016. I have 177000km on the clock. Has been serviced at BMW since new.

I now stopped. I do the following:

Engine oil service = every 10 000km
Rear and Front Diff = every 50 000km
Gearbox and transfer case = every 50 000km
Fuel and air filters = Every second or third engine oil service (shorter intervals than when on motor plan.

My rear diff oil was much darker than the front and smelt terrible but no metal shavings.

I am in Durban (Ballito) and service the car with a mechanic who is a former head of mechanical at one of BMW dealerships, he also ran one of the mechanical departments at a JHB dealership. So well trained and competent and a passion for cars not just a job.

This last service was engine oil and front and rear diff oil service. Total price = R3100.

Mechanic uses BMW oils for the engine and the BMW hypoid axel oil for the diffs.

I do this for preventative maintenance as I plan to keep the car to around the 300 000km mark and then Ill assess again. For me it doesn't make sense to get rid of it as it is mechanically sound and the body work and interior is perfect except the handle of the inside passenger door is peeling but that is minimal. Family want me to sell it but I am happy to see 350 000km before I decide. Car is free hold and I don't want to deal with instalments again.

Looking forward to hearing more from other high mileage X models.

I will do the bushes next and mounts.

Cheers.

Welcome and sounds as if you are on the right track to ensuring your X5 takes you to 350 000km and possibly beyond!

Some other things to consider would be EGR delete, swirl flap delete and downpipe to remove the DPF to ensure there are no surprises later down the line.
If you are happy with the car and it's running well then why sell it. It does not make sense. Keep maintaining it as you are and see what mileage you're able to get her to.
