X5 EGR Valve

Hi Guys. My dad has a X5 40d. A few weeks back the engine light came on (orange one) while driving. He pulled over, offed the vehicle and waited a while. After starting it again, the light went off. It gave the warning that you can drive slowly to your destination. After taking the car to BMW, they said the EGR valve needs to be replaced and quoted him about R4000. The car has about 100,000km on the clock.

I have a few questions is anyone can help: What is this EGR valve? is there any other way of sorting this out? Is this common on diesels?
