It's a heavy vehicle with a huge NA V8. Fuel economy is NOT something you should be worried about when buying one of these, or any, NA V8 BMW.

350km a tank is a good thing? I get around a 1000km with the E70. I'd rather get one of the diesels, much more fun and economical. I have a xdrive35d the 3.0d, 3.0sd/35d, 40d, 50d are all 3.0 but the 3.0d=single turbo, 3.0d/35d=twin turbo, 40d=twin turbo, 50d=tri turbo. Depending on your budget the 35d should be the best option.

Lol if it's giving you 350km from an 85 liter tank, Goodluck to your wallet. But I guess you will never have a bad driving experience.

90% town driving I only get around 440km on a full tank in the 7-er :) got the same on the 6-er sot yeah...it's the rough average for the N62's.

On the open road it gets much MUCH better :)

Trust me when I say this, you will fall INLOVE with the torque. I have driven an E70 4.8i the power is mad yes, but having that stuck in your seat feeling yet still keeping your wallet happy is something I consider amazing, the E53 3.0d we had had the odd 170kw and 500nm which I loved every bit off. The 35d that we now have with its 210kw and 580nm is even more beastly and the boost! Oh my god the boost I love forced induction!!!

I have owned and daily driven an E70 X5 4.8i for the past 7 years.

My average fuel consumption over the 7 years is 15l/100km in mixed driving, which drops down to 12l/100km for long-distance driving. Effective tank range is 550-650km on 85 liters. You really have to drive like a hooligan to only get 350km.

I have had no major mechanical issues with the car. Both rear air suspension springs had to be replaced, brakes and cabin filters are expensive but normal services not so much. I had the gearbox serviced by ZF and wrote a separate thread on that topic, just search for it.

Don't buy an X5 4.8i if you are the penny-pinching sort. It is a big car with a big engine with lots of power and comfort which come at a price.

my x5 e53 4.8is in town I get 14.5l/100km and on the long road around 12.3l/100km , jhb to dbn doing between 120km to 160km when reaching Durban still got around 160km left to drive on a tank.
Its worth every cent............ e53 4.8is

Diesel still the best for consumption, my E70 to Hoedspruit, last week, 7.8 l/100km, average speed 103 km/hr.
Normal day to day 10.6 l/100km.
DPF has been removed and software remapped.

I would also go for the diesel. It matches the V8 in torque (which is what you need in an SUV) and uses at least 30% less fuel.

If you want the V8 experience, rather get a V8 sports car for the weekends and use the diesel for longer journeys and daily commute. The saving adds up once you start racking some good km's.

NB: Steer clear of the sports pack, because they use those ridiculously wide rear tires which are hellishly expensive and wear out rather quickly.
