X5 Diesel fuel consumption

Just returned from 4500km trip to the Kruger park with my 2003 X5 diesel and sticking to the speed limit got 11,4km/l average. Three adults and two toddlers with the car packed to the hilt. Had some incident with a small cut in the left front tyre which resulted in a slow leak. Fortunately noticed it the night before coming back and had it fixed in Bloem (i at first thought it was the valve leaking) where they damaged the rim when they removed the tyre to fix it. Will have to get it welded. Seems to be a problem with the 17 inch rims as i had the same thing happen to me 12 days ago when i swopped the tyres on the rims and had to have the rim welded to fix the damage. I should have warned the tyre fitter to be carefull when removing the tyre but thought hey they are experts, they should know what they are doing. I will have the rim fixed and send them the bill and see what happens as the manager of the fittment centre promised to phone me tomorrow (Monday) to find out how the trip went.

Hi - I get about the same (maybe slightly less) on the long distances. It just very heavy on short distances, but guess it's to be expected...seeing that the car is a permanent 4 wheel drive, automatic, heavy car with fat tyres, not very aerodynamic etc.

I do a lot of long distance in mine, and i average anywhere from 10.6-12l/100km. It depends on how heavy the foot is and how many stop starts you have. I do the Northern Cape to joburg trip and I average around the 11l/100km due to all the stop starts as well as the overtaking of trucks and slower cars.

I reckon if you put the cruise control on a road to Bloem or something, and stick it at 120, you should get it down to around 9.5-10 no problem.

It all depends on how you drive - I have managed to get mine to 8.5l/100km, but then again i was forced to do 80km/h. I enjoy my car too much to worry about the fuel consumption:joy:

Mate, your consumption is what I am getting in our project X5 with me driving miss daisy.

I love how the range on the tank just keeps going up, I got it with a full tank and a range of 670km and I have done about 120km in it and the range now says 780km.

Love this car, so frugal and drives and cruising so well. :=):

Mike, are you referring to the 2006 model that you are detailing at the moment? Was wondering about the remapping you did, what results did you get? Does it feel any faster after the remap?
Have asked about the rims and steering wheel on your other post and am still anxious to hear if they are available for sale. My car has the small/narrow 17 inch rims and maybe that also helps with the good economy?

Hi Solo Man

The consumption I reported earlier earlier was without the map.

With the map on for the last few days and last 100km or so I have seen the consumption go from 11.2 down to 9.9 which is an epic improvement.

The performance is certainly improved with the map, the car sort of bounces as opposed to just gliding and everything feels more responsive.

As for the steering wheel, the old original steering wheel (as is) we are selling for R3000 whereas if you want said old steering wheel revamped and redone like the new one we installed we sell those for R4999.

We are looking for a 4th rim for the wheels currently on the X5, if you have one or find one then we would consider selling the other three and buying yours.

What mags are on your car as we enjoy swapping wheels on the project cars. :joy:

Have been looking for X5 rims now for a while but they are scarce. Only have the four plus spare that is on my car and they are the star spoke Style 57, very common on the 2003 X5 diesel/3,0i non-sport. Would very much like to buy the old steering wheel but will have to save up to be able to do that. What did it cost to have the wheel fitted at the agents?
