X5 19" to 17"

I have a X5 sportspack with 285x45x19 (back) and 255x50x19 (front), and would like to fit 255x60x17 mags and tyres, for better milege on tyres, and better offroad capability, since I stay on a farm, and roads are bad!
Is it possible to use the 17" during the year and fit the 19" when going on holiday? What about the camber settings etc.?
The tyres currently on the car are Michelin runflats. Will non rft's give better milege on the tyres, and will they be better on gravel roads?

Maybe provide a bit more detail on the X5 model. IIRC, all the E53 X5's (except the 4.8is) could take the 17" wheels - spare was only 17", even if you had 19s.

However, I've heard that on the E70 there will be clearance issues with the brakes.

Why don't you just switch to normal 19" tyres.

According to the tyre salesman, I can expect to get 60,000kms with the 17", because it is not a sport tyre, and can be rotated. The 19" are giving me between 30,000 and 35,000.

Yep, you would get slightly better life from the 17s, as the E53 X5 has a very agressive offset at the rear and sports tyres would wear out quicker.

However, why are you using runflats on this car - the previous X5 should take normal tyres only. Your ride must be terrible, as that car was not designed to have runflats on.

My suggestion would be to stick with the 19s, but use normal tyres. I had Toyo Proxies S/T on my previous X5 (also 19s with Sports pack) and they were reasonably priced. I did not have the car long enough to wear out a complete set, but my guess is that I would have got close to 40k-50K on the set. as the Proxies S/T was not an all out sports tyre.

Hi All

Just bought a X5 2003 and would like to do the same, but fit about 255 - 19 in
allround - is there a overflow of the 285 ( back) and 255 front on them, or must I just fit two 255 at the back in the same rim as the front - I also have a few more questions:

1. Are the gearboxes and turbo's really that bad and a big risk

Thanks

17s for farm use. Thats why i chose the 17s on my X3. The 19s look better and provide extra grip but 17s more comfortable.

I bought a 2004 E53 X5 4,4 V8 about a year ago. It had 19" wheels on it. I advertised on Gumtree to swop for standard 17" wheels and got a response in about 5 days. I changed as I like to drive in soft sand for fun from time to time and I also drive on gravel roads occasionally. If you get a puncture on the 19 it doesn't fit into the spare wheel well. If you get a puncture during a trip with a lot of goodies loaded, you can't put the flat 19" into the car. That means hiding it somewhere and coming back later on to fetch it. A right pain in the butt. (That happened to a mate of mine on a trip to Gosini dam a while back.)
Did the wheel alighnment and so far it's all been pure Christmas. Tyres are Michelins and driving in the sand and general comfort and road holding is dead right. I haven't had to buy a tyre yet but, I'm sure a 17" wheel is a lot cheaper than a 19" one. Also, if you do want to put AT's on at some stage, they are readily available in 17"
Si, IMO, it's worth changing.

Did the change stop the dreaded tramlining? I would love to change to 17s for when we are on gravel roads. Not sure the missus would give up the big sport wheels though... she has become quite the tenderproneur with her blackout mothership with big wheels:rollsmile:
