I have been told that bmw has a new software which can detect plug and play or any interference in regards to performance upgrades.
I was told that a bmw dealership in johannesburg does performance upgrades which will still keep your warranty intact. Does anyone know which dealership does this ?

1st part not true, 2nd part true. I think all BMW dealership can do performance upgrades. My 2014 320D had performance upgrade done by Northcliff BMW and the very same bmw had performance chip for a week, which my mates and I were testing while the car was still under MP. I can not say it was detected or not, but my MP was never cancelled. I do not think I was lucky and most of the guys that have JB4 on their cars which are still under a plan, will never tell because they are afraid of MP police which might be present on the forum. I know I was  :fencelook:

If you remove the plug and play unit when you take your car to the dealer, they will not know that it was there. not going to argue with anyone about this

having said that, my advice will be: stay away from modding your car while under the plan if you can not afford to maintain it, should the plan get cancelled. Rather wait till your MP expire, then go for a sw and not these chips. SW upgrade is good value for money.

I think your experience is old news. I have seen threads/posts where people reported that BMWs new software can now detect "possible" modding. It states its not 100% accurate in detecting it but that there is a good chance car was modded, even after you removed the mod before taking the car in to a dealer.

Only seen these posts late 2020 so I would say its a very new warning that pop up on the software. I guess a dealer will only really worry about it, _IF_ your car is in for problems. If only a regular service they probably wouldn't worry about it.

I guess there is only one way to find out  :smilebounce:
I'm taking bets, lets put money where our mouths are. R1000 says they can not detect it when removed. OP! if you are in JHB, lets meet and bring a Race chip with you. One that we can use on 320D, mine is out of the motor plan so we can test with it. You can select any BMW dealership and we will drive there with the chip on and only remove it at the parking lot of the said dealership. I will make a service booking, just for something minor. On the job card, I will specify that I want them to check if any modifications were used on the car while it was not under my care.

Good idea

When you done with the service, also ask them if its only able to detect this only on the newer Gxx cars or earlier like Fxx etc too.

Respect to you @"lebofa" ! Interested to see the outcome of this.

I was also under the impression that any changes can be picked up even if removed as historical data will show changes [increased boost pressures, fuel pressure, etc.].

with a SW upgrade yes, because you have to write on the ECU and change parameters. With a plug and play, NO!, the limits and all different parameters are not over written. The chip just fool the ECU into believing that everything is still within the limits, it does not change any parameters on the ECU, hence the historical data will show that all has been good as no limits were exceeded. The ECU is left intact.
I have sent OP a PM but if anyone has a chip that can work on the 320d, I'm willing to put this debate to rest by offering my car to test. I will pay for the oil change

Bold claims. Maybe some input from anyone with a personal experience?

My guy, I think you are reading between the lines. I have personal experience, the very same car had a chip for almost a week  while still under motor plan and it was never cancelled. I have also offered the same car for anyone who wants to confirm the story so that we can put it to rest. Just bring me the chip and stop believing everything that you read on the web

I was told to remove the plug and play a week before sending it for a service , and use the vehicle and then send it for the service, and was told that bmw will not just look for it, only probably if you have warranty claim.

They can detect all plug and play chips if they update the vehicle's firmware to the latest version, regardless of when you removed the chip, the suspicion flag will pop up immediately.

Seen this on many G series with Racechips

I will not play with software up untill motorplan or warranty is done, so many stories i have read that it was found and warranty/plan did not pay out, not only within the BMW brand but on other platforms too. They will only investigate after something went wrong before repairing under warranty/mplan and they look deep, someone here had to do a replacement engine under plan, the investigation around it was quite intense.
