X3 35i Motorplan

My X3's MP expires on Monday the 28th. The mileage is currently 84000km and I can extend for 1 year/105000km for R23500 :skit:

If you were me, would you extend it or not? The car has never given me issues in the past 18 months that I've owned it. I did however take it in for a stop/start issue which cost MP R15k.

Need another year and another 10000kms

It's about R30k

Given the turbos etc, I am rather going to extend

:thumbdo: not worth it IMO - Unless you take the car for at least 3 services in that time or have to repair something big (Unlikely) put that money into a call account for that rainy day.

For what its worth, I am on 202 000km with my 2.0d F25 X3. It hasn't given me a day's trouble.

I think on average the services are costing me in the region of R3 to R.3.5k. I am still servicing at the dealer but that may change from the next service. There is a former top BMW techie who was at SMG who now works for Neil Woolridge Motors here in PMB building the Ranger offroad race trucks. He can keep an eye on things at a fraction of the cost of the stealership.

SMG here in Pmb has also apparently just been sold to the Supertech franchise and that means the last time they'll see me. Not nice people.....

If you have the R23500.00 available, stick it into a call account and add R2500.00 per month to it. Worst case, something goes wrong, you have money to throw at the problem. Best case, you build up a nice savings account.

I can't speak on the reliability of that motor but if its anything like the 2.0 and 3.0d motors, you have nothing to worry about.

I've been running our X3 out of plan for almost a year now, and you know what....

1) The wheels haven't fallen off yet
2) The engine hasn't imploded
3) It's performing as well as it did when it was under plan

I'm due for a major service now (plugs, oil, filters, front discs and pads). All-in the parts add up to about R8k. I'll do the service myself.

I don't think it's worth that much to extend. Cars don't just disintegrate as soon as that motorplan expires. If it was maybe 10-15k then maybe, but I would rather save that money in a kitty for in case something unthinkable happens.

Thanks for your input guys. Trading in is not an option as there isn't much in my price range as good as this car.

I took the car in for a checkup and an oil leak was discovered. I'll found out how much it will cost MP tomorrow for the repairs.

Thinking of rather taking a warranty like the one I got on the M for mechanical repairs
No way R50k plus is an option

Rather do it. Honestly the aftermarket warranties dont cover much.

Not true at all. I was sceptical about after market warranties, until I had to use mine with the Jeep a week ago. Limit was 9k for a drivetrain control module which ended up costing 9.7k. SA Warranties approved it within 15 minutes, job done. If I had bought the warranty while the factory plan / warranty was still in place, it wouldn't have cost me a penny as then there are no limits on certain items, engine and gearbox being two of those items.

Best part is I paid 7k up front beginning of May so quids in already.

My advice would be to buy a good aftermarket warranty while you car is still in plan. Take the 7k to 20k depending on which one you feel covers you best and if anything fails, you are covered.
