X 3 transfer case issue

So, My BIL's X3 goes on tilt, will not move, dash goes mad, gets hold of Alberante BMW, they recover the car, diagnose a stuffed transfer case, R36K to replace.......well, this way and that, some advice from another dealer, he sources a plastic gear that wears out in the box, gets another one for around R800.00.....yes, R800.00, fits it into the transfer case, easy job I understand, X3 is right as rain.......seems more and more dealers are just part changers, no true mechanics......R36K quote, R800.00 to fix.....170 000km on the X3 BTW, never had hassles since new.....

Dealers are a right rip off. Glad you got it sorted at a much more reasonable price by an Indy

What is interesting is that X3's do not freeze up when the transfer case goes out.

Yea you have DSC and brake light warnings, but it still moves....

I have to agree with Leonard... dealerships have taken the "replace rather than repair" approach to everything. If a car is under MP it's fine but if not I think the dealerships are just down-right lazy!

Nope, this one stopped dead, was a problem to load and unload on a flatbed.
