I think I posted something in a thread a while back but I thought today I would make a dedicated thread.

Quakelive is a free browser based first person shooter based on the very successful Quake 3 Arena engine, which apparently is also used in other popular modern FPS games these days.

From the initial stages of registration to your first rocket fired takes approximately 20 minutes on a decent internet connection. In my view there are around 300 or so registered players (if you consider smurfs) but in total the number of registered accounts is 650. Thus at almost any time during the day you will manage to find a game with the servers usually pretty active in the evenings and weekends when you can find around 20-30 people playing.

If you are starting out, I can suggest playing the Clan Arena (CA) game type, which is the most arcade format available. You will be given all the weapons with ammo and no self damage so you can easily become familiar with the various weapons without stressing about where to actually locate them and more importantly, you can practice the rocket jumps.

For the experienced player who is unaware Quakelive exists, there are many other experienced players and recently Ph4ntom has been pretty active on the servers as well as other strong players.

There is also a dedicated ELO rating system available at www.qlranks.com which will track all games played and give you a rating, so you will be able to measure or track your skill level and if indeed you are improving or not.

Online tournaments are hosted by www.xtcgaming.co.za with no registration fee but with some prizes up for grabs.

If you wish to get a feel for the game you can watch the Intel Extreme Masters final between cooller and rapha on youtube. The commentators are pretty good and will give you insights as to what is required when playing Quakelive in terms of the decision making processes that players go through while playing.

or you can watch this clip which deals with just one of the maps with commentary by rapha himself.

I tried it a while ago and it seemed to take forever to load after already taking a long time to install, so gave up on it... Might give it a try again, especially once I have a faster internet connection!

This brings back good memories. I used to dominate Quake 3 arena on Nightmare and used to kick ass online. I think I should get back into it...

I added you guys too if you don't mind. :) Started again last night. It's allot different than it was plying on a LAN. It's a bit delayed sometimes and that really cocks up my accuracy.
