Who owns it?

So I was getting my car washed at the place that's right at the foot of the Helshoogte Pass yesterday morning. Lovely sunny day and so there was lots of exotica running up into the mountains. Couple of Porsches and some older Mercs and things go by, and then a pristine-looking white BMW M1 howls up the pass. That M88 sounds amazing - proper old-school BMW noise, and the way it cleared off into the distance it was still making all its power. Pity it was gone too soon for me to take a photo.

So, given that they only made 456 or so of these things, and only a few would have come to South Africa, do we know where this car is from? Someone's private collection, maybe?

I have heard of one around here, Northern suburbs, but have never seen it.

I think there are three of them in RSA, not 100% sure. I have only seen one in GP and I have never seen one on the road.

I know of a guy in Kuilsriver who owns one.

Still need to get in touch with him (if I can remember his name).
Not sure of the colour though.

If it went up the pass it might be the Franschhoek Motor Museum's?

I thought as much, but I don't know for certain - if so then it's good to see it being driven in the appropriate manner.:bravo:

Funny you mention Helshoogte. Was at an friends house this weekend, turns out the garage is filled with some rather yummy exotics. V8 Vantage, Carrera S, Jag XKR, even a Fezza California. Owner reckons they're all for enjoying Helshoogte Pass :bravo:

It's a lovely road when it's clear of dawdling tourists. Had a hair-on-fire run up there against my friend's RenaultSport Clio 197. Epic fun.

I don't think heart would have survived seeing that car! M1, BMW M1! There are no words! :praise:

I LOVE THAT CAR! My dream! I saw a red one many years ago in a Midrand dealership, Johannesburg.

A company actually made a replica so well that BMW stopped them from using the kidney grille.

My heart beats just thinking about an M1! It's just something too great for me!

Check out this kit by Saier kit cars! The rear quarter seems to slope down a little more than the original but it looks great indeed.

Here is a real one with widened wheel arches:
