Hi guys,
I DESPERATELY need some help in determining what's causing a "whisteling" sound on my 2001 318i E46 (pre-facelift) BMW. At 197,000Km at present. After sending my car in for a major services, it started making this sound but only after you've been driving a while (temperature shows normal - no overheating). It sounds like worn out breaks, but it comes from infront of the engine. Not sure exactly where, but around the pullies, water filter and alternator area.
With the major service they replaced the spark plugs, air filter, oil filter, breather pipe, skimmed the breaks, brake pads and the normal things (oil etc.). Nothing out of the ordinary. They also replaced another filter of some sort appearantly under the engine/car, and I had the radiotor replaced because it was leaking and old. They also did a 49-point check on the car during the major service.
It's been back to a mechanic now three times, and they replaced the waterfilter and breather pipe with original BMW parts. I also had to replace the 2 tensioner pullies (small ones infront of the engine), but it turned out that they weren't the cause.
Te "whisteling" noise only starts after I'ved driven around a bit, and as soon as I accelerate the noise goes away. As soon as I let go of the petrol while driving or just idling, it's back again. The funny thing is that when you pull out the oil dipstick, the sound goes away immediately after a burst of air leaves the enigne through the dipstick tunnel. This means tat the engine is buiding up too much preassure, but it's not overheating at all or causing any reduction in power whatsoever.
Both mechanics are dub-struck (like me). They don't know what it could be, ut my argument is that the car wasn't making this noise when I took it in for the service, but now it is. I even got the first mechanic (from a nationwide chain of service centres) to go over everything AGAIN that they worked on and replaced, and they found everything in order.
Has anyone out there heard of something like this before, or could anyone give me some advice?
Thanks, Hein.
