Hi everyone

Been getting a whining sound from the X5 recently. Happens when the vehicles on the go so guessing it is a drivetrain issue - diff perhaps. Anyone experience anything similar or willing to shed some light?

I'll try to upload a video clip over the weekend. It's not very loud & can't really be heard from inside the vehicle when driving even with the windows down. I noticed the sound when my dad drove off the other day.

Lol at the towbar comment :roflol::biglol:

When you say whine, you don't think you're hearing a turbo whistle?

Alternator?

Yeh this car certainly did no pulling of trailers etc lol.

Well the noise is not there when the vehicle is stationary so I therefore ruled out anything running off the engine viz. turbo, alternator, oil pump, power steering pump, air con compressor etc. I don't think it's the turbo. Definitely a whine - don't quite know how serious this is. Had a Nissan 1400 a few years back which had a whine or hum rather coming from the diff but it ran like that for some time without any consequences.

Could be something from the drive line. Do the front and rear tyres have more or less the same amount of tread? I remember seeing on a thread here that it is a bad thing for AWD Beemers. Something about the difference in tyre diameter.

Same amount of thread. For all I know it could even be CVjoints :dunno:

Have you been able to replicate the noise by putting the car in Neutral and revving it?

I've started the vehicle in park & there was no whine, haven't tried it in neutral.

Just an update. Took the car in on Monday to a gearbox specialist. Vehicle was taken for a test drive. The vehicle was then put in the workshop on the ramp. It was started & run through the gears. The various driveline components were inspected.

No fault was found. The technicians conclusion was that the sound is not being caused by any of the drivetrain components but was being caused by the type of tyres fitted on the vehicle.

Kinda have the same issue on the F30 320i.
But mine only starts when i switch the aircon on. Makes a whining noise for a few seconds and then stops.
