Which car to get?? (X3 comparisson discussion...)

Hi all

Its time for me to upgrade... after some discussing we have decided on an SUV but i like sporty/speedy cars. budget R350k

My dilemma: My car has software done and runs good, so if I fork out so much money I dont want to end up with a slower car, I want a upgrade. Also, of lesser concern, my old E90 rides damn hard so I would like that bettered as well.

Options: X1 my wife does not like cause of the station wagon look. SO now I can just about manage to get a new shape X3. But here is my problem...I believe the 2.0 diesel will be underwhelming. And motorplan complicates tuning. I drove a diesel x1 and that felt flippen slow.

But the 3.5 petrol also felt slow, even though I know that is because of the smooth auto. the bigger problem is the fuel consumption on this. I would like to have owned the famous 3.5 petrol engine. But this will litereally cost double to run cause of the fuel consumption, or am I exaggerating?

Then there is the class of 2009 X5 with 3.0diesel engin. My favourite engine option. but the car is older, and its old BMW tech, I havent driven it but believe this will also be a harsh ride? (X6 also starting to join the club...)

then, to confuse me...if I get the X3 diesel which I percieve to be slow...I can just as well look at the new Sportage. A new car for the same money, stretch my budget a bit but they tick the boxes. Does anyone know what is the tunability of a diesel Kia????

I also considered the expensive BMW performance upgrade on the diesel. it will have me happy, and in the end still be cheaper over say 80 000km than the petrol option.

soooooo, lots of scenarios, which would you choose?

Those X5's are flippen beautiful.

what fuel consumption can I expect from that?
and a ball park figure for a set of tyres?

That will then also be out of motorplan...how much should I worry? I have been happy with my current car out of motorplan, I actually decided to never again even take an aftermarket warranty.

Next step....I need to get my wife to drive the X5 and agree, as I agree hehe

The E70 X5 is bulletproof. Bettered suspension and all. The only things that will cost you plenty are the tyres. You're looking (I guess) at around 4k+ for the back ones.

The ride is smooth.
Engine fantastic.
Comfort aplenty.

Fuel consumption not too sure, never driven one myself. Again I guess average of between 8 and 12 liters per 100km.

Take another look at the X1

I have the X1 2.8 XDrive in MSport, Awesome performance, and pretty spacious.

I don't think you will find the E70 to be old tech..

I really need to go drive one then.

My other concern is the automatic...I will be moving from a manual. Are they good on the E70? I know the 8 speeds are good but even there its a bad pill to swallow to move to auto...

Wish I could actually. I love the look of some of them, plus I like the idea of it being smaller and more nimble.

I am surprised no one is screaming yes for the 3.5 petrol. I guess the petrol price is biting us all hard, also maybe the reason why its actually going for "cheap" and I should just bury that thought?

The fuel consumption in town about 12/L per 100, long distance 9/L 100
The tyres non RFT about R 10 for a set, i've got a set of Azura pace on and the mileage is much better and more comfy. The RFT is about R 24 lucky I've got the space saver emergency.
My MP is just finished but this is my 3rd 3.0d and no worries, they dont explode.
It's a big and heavy car so fuel consumption must not worry you, maybe my next one will be a X3 for better fuel consumption.
The MSport rides hard but the looks make up for that.

The 6 speed box is more than competent. Although after experiencing an 8 speed from a 530d, I find that it suits the Diesel engines so much better as it eliminates lag and stays within the power band.

The 6 speed in our 35d sometimes feels like Its revving unnecessarily, so when I'm accelerating quickly I usually put it into manual mode so I can shift earlier.

Soooo, after a lot of debating with my wife/bank manager I will start the mission now of finding an X3 that I want. 2.0 diesel.

Thanks for everyones input! :ty:

Reasons was mostly the lower running costs of the X3 vs X5.

So, if I may ask another question, how will the X3 with motorsport kit and its bigger rims manage a gravel road? It will be the exception if I can help it, but I still have to cater for gravel...

And have Exige/Promotec/Projectshift managed to crack the new 2.0diesel engines?

The X3 2.0d is better with fuel, but the R 350 budget will get you a 2011, hope you find a nice car

Yes, I do hope so. Its a lot of money for me, so I really plan to buy something I can keep a while and be contend with it. Which explains why I am so lost on whether I must get a sportspack one or not. Its a lot more expensive
