What wrong with my car?

Hi guys,

Noticed this happen on a few occasions now, as soon as the car is up to operating temps i hear a squeaking sound at low speeds (20 - 40 km/h)coming from either the wheels or somewhere in that area (i think). As i speed up it goes away. Doesn't do this when the car is cold though:dunno::dunno:

I have ruled out brakes as it doesn't make the sound only under braking, its during normal driving? Could it be bearings or shocks??

Thanks.

P.S - Mods please move to correct section if need be.

Could be brakes/discs. :dunno:
Is there a ridge on any of the brake discs? What's the remaining wear on the pads? Could even be the sensor on the brakes that is starting to touch the discs. :dunno:

+1 Would make sense, at temp it expands a little... :dunno:

Not sure if it's the same issue Mo but searched the web as I have a similar defect on my car and there was no joy from the dealers :nonono:

In my case the squeaking noise is most noticeable at low speeds, probably under 20km/hr and prominent after heavy braking or spirited driving.

Best answer I found was in the link below:

Taking the car in next Wednesday armed with the Puma Number (PC# 29814970) and hope they can sort it out

I don't mean to burst your bubble but this is not the permanent fix. The problem will come back after you wear out the pads enough for the sensors to begin making contact with the rotors, which btw is what causes the noise, this will usually happen once you put some wear in the pads. This is the explanation I got back when I had my 335i by the shop foreman. They had replaced the Pads, Rotors & Sensors in my car and the problem came back within a month or so... I think it's also been talked about in a longer old thread. Good Luck!

Thought an interim solution is better than none at all. Besides some guys didn't have the issue come back. Guess I'll have to see...

This is a very old issue and was reported on in this forum before but cant find the link. I recall revo@rennzport had the correct solution...cant recall. Either the brake sensor or something in that area needs replacing

Also have a look at the wheel bearings. I had a squeak on a car for 6 months that the "expert dealers" could not diagnose and it turned out to be bearings...

While they checking everything, let them check the brake pad clips as well, 2 of my previous cars were either missing clips or clips were bent to much causing a rattle at low speeds.

This is a common problem on the 335i's and my car has been in 4 times for it!!

They replaced all my discs and break pads and it hasnt come back for the past 1000km.

BMW know about it but every time I took it in before they just clean the discs and then after 500km its back.

The guy at the dealership told me dont worry, his 335 has it as well, I was like thats nice but just fix it.

Yep, old issue, same with the 330i - I posted about this just after I joined this forum since that's how far back I experienced this. And you will be amazed at how few people actually even notice it...

I gather this is the noise that you are hearing.

handbrake not releasing properly?

That is what it sounds like to me as well.

Funnily enough, I did read something about this, but it was something to do with the way the brake shoes fit and the guy that posted this had some sort of DIY fix - must see if I can find this.

If the handbrake is not correctly adjusted and is starts to bind, then you will most likely have what happened to me just after my car was serviced at the beginning of last year - driving along the N1 and I hear a rumble which at first I thought was from my music, got louder, then thought it was maybe a truck in a few lanes over, then it started to vibrate lightly and eventually the whole car started to vibrate badly while I am at this stage trying to work out if it's drivetrain or what. All happening in a matter of less than a minute or so, was forced to stop on the should on the RIGHT side of the road! Got out and checked that all wheels were on properly, all seemed fine and decided to limp my way through to the nearest dealer - less than a minute later limping along at 80km/h again forced to stop, and this time I heard a squeaking brake sound as the car came to a full stop. Got out to see if the brakes were over-heating but seemed fine - eventually got to Forsdicks and they had a look. Immediately the mech checks the handbrake and reports that it has been overtightened and has caused the handbrake to bind and overheat! They adjusted it for me but I was really really annoyed!

Took the car back to SMG and insisted that they replace the rear disks and handbrake shoes!
