What seal is this?

After replacing my VANOS seals and removing the intake manifold and all associated intake air hoses I noticed this seal:

I only recall handling the plastic engine cover and MAF housing that fits into the throttle body before that.

So does it fit around the oil filler opening like this:

or inside the MAF housing like this:

or elsewhere?

I doubt it's the latter but the former seems unlikely too. Perhaps somewere else on the air intake between the air filter and the intake manifold?

the e46 has a seal like that around the oil filler... if there is nothing there then I would say thats where it goes :)

I always have some labeled containers when taking a few parts off my car so i dont mix up parts...

I see there are part numbers on it... try realoem and see what you find

Thanks, that was my initial thoughts as well but the seal did not really sit flush when I put the cover back on so it rattled my cage.

I used small zip locks and carton boxes to keep the stuff together but still managed to loose an intake manifold nut  Of course I only noticed it when reassembling on Saturday night.

What did it set you back to replace your vanos seals btw?:fencelook:

Valve cover gasket from Goldwagen: can't remember. Say R200. Perhaps less.
15 x VCG bolt seals from BMW: R200
6 x Bosch spark plugs from BMW: R160
VANOS gasket from BMW: R80
2 x copper washers for VANOS oil pipe: small change. BMW asked R30 for 2 aluminum washers!
Single VANOS seals from Moranor: R375

Think that's it.

Edit: replaced VCG and spark plugs due to a leaking VCG.
Bosch sensor safe gasket sealant: R85 at Midas

Yup, got the parts in time, thanks. Won't have time to replace the front suspension bits before my trip to Durban, though. :thumbdo:

I'm only getting a new rubber grommet for the CCV today - did not realise I needed two, one for the CCV and one for the ICV as the ICV. The CCV to valve cover hose's connector broke so I'm replacing the hose with a larger diameter one to fit over the connectors instead of inside them. Still need to source the intake manifold nut. The ICV was a bit sticky and I replaced the CCV. I'm really hoping all that will sort the fault codes else the MAF and O2 sensors are next in line for replacing.
