What camera lens to get?

Hey guys

So long story short, my 17-55mm f2.8 lens was sent to Nikon due to fungus that developed on one of the elements inside:yuck: Got a quotation from Nikon saying that it is uneconomical to repair and parts would need to be shipped in from Singapore, because the elements would need to be replaced due to impact and fungus damage. I've sent the information to my broker to submit a claim so hopefully I'll be able to get a replacement lens soon.

I'm thinking that if they do cover the lens should I stick with the 17-55 or get a 24-70 f2.8? I like the wide end of the 17-55, but always found the long end a bit too short. Is the 24-70 good as an all round lens?

Any other suggestions?

It will be used on a D7100 by the way and I don't plan on going full frame anytime soon.

18-200 or 18-300..... but not sure if you just wanna get a lens with a Low F-stop....

whatever you do.... stay away from a fisheye, unless you into those lenses...

I had a Sigma 18-200mm before, but it was nowhere near as sharp as my 17-55mm. I'm not too worried about telephoto zoom lenses as I mostly shoot in the portrait range. My only concern with the 24-70 is that I might miss not having that extra 17-24 range which is great for group shots and getting unusual angles.

How about a 50mm lens? Since I got my 50mm, its the only lens I ever use. I have a 50mm 1.8 but would be better to get a 1.4

I already have a 35mm prime lens, so I need a good zoom to complement it. The 17-55 is what stayed on my body since I got it though. Just hoping my claim gets approved. I'll either replace it with the same lens or get a 24-70. Not sure if there are any other options in that range.

It depends on what you shoot the 24-70 Tamron is right up there on the quality side, it focuses slower than the 24-70 Nikkor, but you wont notice it at weddings, car shows and general shoots, you may miss it for a tion but the 70-200 is excellent as an all rounder on a full frame body.

Great lens. Now you should also get the other two in the Nikon famous trio, 10-24/4 and 70-200/2.8.

Not anytime soon. Need to recover from this purchase first:argh: I think my next lens will either be a 14-24 f2.8 or the 70-200 f2.8 depending on my needs. At the moment I'm miss the wider angles of my 17-55mm, but the 24-70 makes up for it with faster focusing and slightly sharper image quality:rollsmile: So if I had to pick between those 2 right now I would definitely take the 14-24.

I'm more of a primes guy... If only you could get 5 lenses that cover your range. Primes have lower F-stop and are much sharper.

But, seeing as that is not the case, I would try stick with something similar to Canon L glass when going with zoom lenses. They tend to be much sharper and also have a fixed F-stop that doesn't change as the lens zooms. Also all the fancy USM and IS stuff that help get a steady sharp image.

But just for interest sake, if you ever do get the chance, take a look at Zeiss CP lenses (Compact Primes).

Totally agree with you that primes are sharper. Unfortunately it would cost a fortune to cover all ranges and isn't very practical when shooting a wedding or event where you have a limited amount of space to work with and time to switch between lenses. I do intend on getting a 50mm or 85mm prime for portraits to complement my 35mm in the not too distant future:idea:

My 24-70 is the 24-70 Canon L equivalent. I don't think I could ever go back to using variable aperture zooms after using fixed aperture zooms:rollsmile:

With my 35mm i find it super sharp wide open, but as soon as you go above f3.5-4.5 it starts losing a lot of it's sharpness which I don't find to be the case with the 24-70 which is sharp throughout the aperture range.
